These are some photos of my rather small case N scale layout that is nearing completion. As you can see in this overall view, the layout is just 13"x52". Its simple but provides nice switching opportunities. Primex plastics is a key industry receiving plastic pellets in covered hoppers and shipping out bulk plastic products such as corrugated plastic and various packing materials. #7306 delivering a hopper of plastic pellets to Primex
A local pulls into town past the Capital Graphics warehouse. Moving on toward the primex plant, #7306 crosses over county road 41. The loading ramp and open area at the local team track finds itself in a variety of uses for different customers.
A tank car waits for a tanker semi to come and begin to unload at the team track. These photos came out a little dark. I have more details to add to complete these scenes. I'll post better pictures nce that is completed. This layout being built in a case is nice for those of us without any space. It can be stored away, and within 10 minutes I can have it out, set up, and trains running. I am in the process of setting up switch lists which will define each operating session. The lists will be organized in a way that every 4 sessions, the car patterns will repeat.
Your layout looks really good. I'm guessing you're using the inside of a gun case? And are you using dcc or just regular power?
It is indeed the inside of a gun case. The height of buildings and trees were closely monitored so the case can be closed and easily carried. Since the layout is so small and will only be operated by one person it is DD powered. A slightly larger layout could utilize two engines and DCC, but frnakly, on this layout I don't think two engines can go anywhere without running into each other. While it would be nice to have something bigger, this is excellent for the individual who can't leave something permenantly set up. set up and take down are very quick and easy.
Wow, very impressive, and an inspiration! The track work looks great. Can I ask what the baseboard is? Plywood or foam?
Oddly enough, its an extra ceiling tile for a drop ceiling that was laying around. Typically, I wouldn't suggest using something like that due to a lack of rigidity, but since this was inside the plastic gun case, it made it workable. If this relates to your thread about a small trolley layout, I would NOT suggest a ceiling tile!
It kind of did relate to that, and I will take your advice and not do it! Amazing that your supplies just fall from the sky for you though. Do you get track that way too?
Finally got some better pictures. Here's an overall view showing the full track plan. Who needs a drawn track plan when the whole thing can be in one photo! Here is the area around and behind Capital Graphics
Photos of Primex Plastics The Monster billboard on county road 41 Now I need to work on detailing these scenes....
I'm really diggin' your creativity. Do you carry the trains and controler in the case too when it's closed? What a great layout to take to the inlaws for those extended holliday trips when you're not doing anything.
I have not set this up yet, but my intention is to make it so the cars and locomotive are carried inside their cases on the inside of the lid. Make sense? I don't anticipate the controller being able to be on the inside of the case due to its thickness. There isn't a place to put it without damaging scenery.
FYI, Due to a developing interest in steam era railroading, I have listed this layout for sale in the trainstore area.
Wow, I just stumbled across this posting and I'm really impressed. I take it that the gun case used is a SKB style which is also makes cases for traveling musicians to put their guitars into. For only 13" X 52" you sure packed a lot of interesting scenery in there! Though I have one question, is it DC power or battery powered? You mention that the layout is DD powered. Was that a typo or are you using Double D batteries so the layout can be operated in areas were electrical power isn't an option? Great looking layout!!
