I don't know if there would be enough numbers for this, but you could have mainline six-axle engines (SD70ACe, ES44AC, Dash-9) as 4-digit numbers, 4-axle & small 6-axle road switchers (SD40-2,GP38-2) as 3-digit numbers, and yard engines (genset) as 2-digit numbers. Or if there are overlaps you could simply add letters; maybe choose one of either X (for "extra"), Y (for "yard"), or SW ("switcher") Examples: 188X 257Y 169SW
Another option would simply be to designate number ranges by engine class, much as the SP designated engines in the past, like 2300-class (T) tenwheelers, 2400-class (P) pacifics, 2700-class (C) consolidations, 2900-class (TW) twelvewheelers, 5200-class baldwin diesels: Examples: Genset:1000-series GP's:2000-series SD's:3000-series Dash-9:40000-series ES44AC:5000- to 6000-series SD70ACE:7000- to 8000-series
from what im understanding this was used by UP because they have over 10000 locomotives thus some numbers are used twice and the only difference is some are labelled UP and some are labelled UPY thus if i have SPY 2800 i can have a main line loco SP 2800
If the revision of history is going to be that SP is the company that took over everyone else...then everything should have the SP light package...right???
Of course, even if SP did the taking over, that wouldn't stop the mandate for ditch lights and once that went through, the ever frugal SP would err... ditch the Christmas Tree.
Ok, here's my thought. SPY reporting marks on the cab. Leave off the scarlet on the ends and make them all gray like the UP "ghosts". On the nose, have the big white "SP" with the red and white stripes below. Oh and of course speedlettered with white sill stripes.
its not im simply saying in orthodox so i can number a regular locomotive in that same series like having a genset SPY 2800 and like another mainline loco (perhaps a repainted UP or CNW) be like SP 2823 something like that just to justify the reuse of the series is what im asking.
This isn't really a question for the SP forum, but I wish I understood the logic between what was a Y and a road unit on the UP. I was at Roseville a couple weeks ago and there were GP38s etc some Y some not all lined up together outside the shop.
At Roseville, I only know of SW1500, MP15 AC & DC, GP15-1, SD38-2, and six axle Gensets that have the Y. Also the CCRCLs and slugs got it too. Don't know of any GP38-2s.
