No one is making these light packages any more so I decided to make my own. I can fabricate them from styrene and I probably will. Someone wrote an article about this in (I think) N Scale Magazine. Also, IIRC, the author was a member of the Belmont Shore Model RR Club. There wasn't too much interest as you could purchase these from Detail Associates at the time the article was written. Anyone else remember this? Anyone know the magazine and / or the month? Thanks.
I was just checking and could not find it in the Jul-Aug1989 through Nov-Dec 1994 issues of N Scale magazine.
I found it. Mike Rademacher was the author. It is in the Jul-Aug 1999 issue of N Scale Magazine. (Vol. 11, No. 4)
They aren't? That's funny, Miniatures By Eric is still advertising them. http://www.miniaturesbyeric.com/itm00324.htm Andre
Didn't N scale of Nevada make them as well. With Mr. Wiseman taking over perhaps there will be a chance of them returning from there as well.
Here are the MBE lights mentioned above installed on my SW1500 bash (the left one and middle one). The light on the right was taken from the Atlas MP15DC housing.... Russ
Miniatures by Eric, and Details Associates (plastic) are available. The photos on MBE Website and the DA on N Scale Supply don't do the castings/injections justice. Athabasca Models has a std cab kit # 8103 N - EMD Standard Cab Kit which has a SP light package. I would use the DA or MBE details. It would be great if the the N Scale o' Nevada were re released. How long ago did you email him? Remember, this is a cottage industry and he doesn't have a large staff. Andre
I have ordered some Detail Associates parts that I think I need. My intention is to use strip styrene for the base and create different light packages for use on different engine types.
Here's What I Did I had not forgotten about this. It should probably be a "What's On My Workbench" thread. First I selected and bought the parts. Detail Associates #8219 Single oscillating light Detail Associates #8218 Dual Oscillating light Detail Associates #8216 Dual Headlight early Evergreen styrene # 104 .010" x .080" Evergreen styrene # 164 .080 x .080 inch Photo of parts: Here are the parts cut from the sprues. The single and double Pyle headlights are glued to the thin .080" stryene, single headlight on top. Here are the engines before adding the light package. The engine on the right has a Sunrise Enterprises light package with jewels in the light housings. I don't plan to do that.
Next, I used a sharp hobby knife to cut the molded headlights from the LifeLike shell. I always thought there would be a use for these but I usually destroy them in the removal process. Then sand the end to make the surface smooth and to expose some plastic for gluing the styrene light package. Man! That is some rough looking weathering! I will probably have to get creative to paint that back into something normal. More weathering, obviously! Next, I just glue the two parts of the light package in place using "that looks about right" method. Actually, the correct placement seems to be with the lower edge of the dual light housing centered in the middle of the numberboards in height. I used photos from Richard Percy's Espee Modeler's website. Check this photo for prototype info. I didn't have any of the Evergreen #164 so I just created a support for the upper headlight portion. Pretty easy to do. In fact, I may change my mind about using #164 at all. A size .040 x .080 inch might be better for the height. Still have to paint it later. Hope this helps some of us get these light packages on our Espee engines. There are also some light package variations such as horizontal dual light setups. Check this GP40-2 rear light package. I will post another photo when I get this painted.
Flash - Looks great! I've got a GP9 that is on the to-do list that I'm going to do up as Sierra 46, and I'll need a modified SP light package for it, your instructions will work perfectly. Thanks for sharing, and of course show us the finished product when you get it painted and weathered. Gotta keep us SP junkies going w/ good fixes every now and then
