A very timely question indeed! I'll be acquiring equipment for my engine terminal. I'm not concerned so much about historical accuracy as "credible constructs" as I run almost any road.
That proto photo is the bomb - looks like you'll be investing heavily in GMM industrial walkways and stairways just like I did for my JS West Mill project . I think you could scratchbuild something like that fairly easily. And it would be showcase scene on the layout when completed, for sure. Lots of soldering to get that staircase right though - I may be tempted to use an industrial ladder & safety cage in it's place....
That looks great can i order 3? Not sure if these are any help, their not models but maybe some ideas from one of them.
The one in Portland looks similar to the one in San Antonio. I scratch built mine using styrene and there are some details to go including weathering. The height is approximate as I had no way to measure that. This is the sanding towers. There were six in San Antonio but I only had room for five. Here is my version. I didn't add the hoses as that is too much trouble to clean. It's bad enough to clean as it is. Close up of the area under the towers. The fuel hydrants should be along the base here. Another detail to add. I need ladders going up to the top of the sand domes (containers?). This is all UP property and leased to a rail repair facility. I expect it will be demolished.
Jim, very nice scene. I would have thought your diesel facility would be larger. BTW , all your trains are too clean. Any plans to do any weathering?
It's a Bachmann/Heljan locoshop/wash two kits spliced together, base kit has only two stalls. I also added a Walthers smokestack to the addon building to represent boiler house. http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/322-612
Both the sand tower and fuel cranes are from American Limited...and I feel no pull to weather, at least not yet...I like things neat and clean!
Once you start Jim....you cant stop! LOL (To some extent anyway. ) As always...the layout looks fantastic!
