I heard rumors there was talk about restoring a steam engine a while back, it wasn't one of the two that ran before the steam program was cancelled, any of it true? Seeing what the UP did for the DNC in Denver, would be fun if NS could do something for the Charlotte DNC 2012 since it is on one of their routes and much closer to home Alex
NS and the TVRR are teaming up to run excursions using the TVRR locomotives. Locomotives will include 4501, 610, and 630. Feb 19th I start my rules classes and training on the TVRR to operate these locomotives.

Me too! There is several hundred hours of training I have to complete before I can pull the throttle, but I am hoping to get through it this year as quickly as I can. This is also the 50th anniversary of the TVRR museum and they would like to have all three under steam together. 630 is almost completed, 610 just went in for it's boiler inspections, and 4501 still has alot that needs done. Also in the shops is a Southern E unit being rebuilt, so alot going on!
After I went up to OH a couple months ago to see my old crew and 765 with my Grandson Caleb, the steam bug got me going again and I started my quest for the next chance to operate steam. Luckily, Chattanooga is just 1hr and 15mins from my house. Also, seeing how much joy Caleb was getting out of it brought out the child in me too.....Oh what a feeling!
New poster here. Just curious. Which SR E-unit is it? I'm an old retired Southern RR/ NS guy. Had lots of experience with those things as a clerk/Train Order Operator. Rode in them, too. There's one E8 at Spencer (6900) and an F7 (6133). Both "old friends", so to speak. :thumbs_up: GF

A pristine "SR hat (Piedmont Division) a couple of SR "Greenlighter jackets" 1910 Hamilton 992 watch (yes, I used it in the 80's) with Simmons chain Watch Card (doesn't match, matching watch was stolen at the watch inspector's store while being cleaned and inspected) He had to replace it with the 1910 one. several NS "Online for....... winning the Harriman" hats, etc A couple NS jackets. a set of Southern whiskey tumblers with the gold rim and SR logo/scenery. (Ain't NOBODY a-gittin' THAT!) A set of NS tea glasses an SR rulebook A photo of the "Last Run of Steam with an F-unit, Engine 6330, and 'The Best Friend of Charleston'". It hung in the office of the SR's Roadway Shops for 40 years; they threw it in the trash, and I retrieved it. A picture of "The Southern Crescent" being pulled by Pacific #1401 and a pencil drawing of a Southern steam freight loco--given by a friend. A couple of Seiko 'railroad approved' watches with the 'NS" logo--given by the company as safety awards a copy of an order *I* copied in the 80's clearing a local to go to work. "OLD" metal Hanlan hand lantern (good weapon to fend off suspicious characters in the Yards!:tb-biggrin A PLASTIC, orange handlan lantern with the "SR" "Southern Serves the South"-Look Ahead, Look South" logo. Hmmm--I seem to have collected a bunch of "stuff" over 30 years! LOL! GF
JD: Do you know if they will put the steam whistle on it that Graham Claytor equipped it with back in the 1970's for use on the Crescent? I believe that this is the E-8 that had it. Somewhere I still have the little blurb, with a picture of the top of the loco, at the steam generator and the whistle, in a Trains mag from then and wish I could find it.
I've known so many rails who did not keep things, and later wished they'd done so... Sounds like you have a nice assortment of memories! Boxcab E50
