Does anyone know how many cars the Rio Grande ran in
the pipe trains back in the 1950's?
When they moved gas pipe from Durango, CO to Farmington, NM.
I'm interested in building a G Scale narrow gauge train, including pipe gons/idler flats.
But, I'm unsure how many cars were run in a train.
Also not sure if run as a solid train, or as part of a regular freight train.
Just picked up 2 Conoco tank cars, to go along with 4 Standard Gasoline
tanks, fotr a total of 6. As soon as I can get taxes done, I'm thinking of ordering
a number of AMS cars, including a selection of pipe gons/idler flats, boxcars,
reefers and maybe a couple of drop bottom gons. Should go/look good with the K-27!
As always, any information much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have seen photos of solid pipe trains that were pretty huge. All goes off the demand basiclly. So I guess as long or as short as you like. You could always add in some pipe cars to the local or road train saying they were in the yard being repaired and missed their regular train.

    Keith,

Are you familiar with the narrow gauge discussion forum? There are a number of quite knowledgable folks there that should be able to answer your pipe gon question.

I seem to recall seeing a photo or two in books. Perhaps a person might get an idea from those? Not a bad diversion to browse those pages anyhow...
