First person to create an iPad app to control a DCC system (especially that almost impossible to use Digitrax stuff, but any system would benefit) will make a LOT of money!
I think direct control would be near impossible from an iPad, since it doesn't really have any ports to connect to a layout. However, there is always indirect control like iRoc. Which runs with the free rocrail.
Here we go again...another non-Digitrax user who feels the need to bash a system I and thousands of other users seem to have no trouble using...at all. And I don't believe that your second premise is water-tight. The number of DCC users in the hobby who also have iphones and who would then forego their already perfectly functioning DCC systems just to use an iphone that must then somehow interface with their perfectly functioning DCC system....you get where I'm headed with this one? :talktohand:
Couldn't you just hook up the system to a wireless access point and control via wifi? That way you could control via anything with wifi access, be it your ipad, computer or whatever.
Foist- a word meaning http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/foist Your use of the term is at best licentious, and at worst fatuous. Neither CSX Robert nor I were under any duress, nor laboured we under any pretext on the part of Digitrax. We got what we sought, and use it with confidence, skill, and alacrity. You must not have had such a well-researched introduction....?
Can you back this up with specifics? What failings does the system have that other presently commercially produced solutions do better? Can you objectively quantify these differences in performance, functionality, reliability or otherwise?
Wasn't "weaned" on computers like most of you younger folks. So to me the Digi-crap manuals were written? by very ALIEN computer geeks. LOL
Like the idea Tony - I'll add my two cents - have a list of your trains/locos. Double tapping would bring up the ability to update decoder settings or control speed, direction, bells/whistles, etc. WiFi works with the iPod, so if there's a market - someone will figure it out!
What I don't understand is why is it so often that non-Digitrax users feel the need to trash Digitrax. You generally don't see Digitrax users doing the same to other systems. Is it because others feel the need to justify there choice but Digitrax users know they made the right decision for them and aren''t worried about what others think? I don't know, just wondering.
Whatever it is, they diminish their credibility by using trash talk rather than imparting the least bit of substance into their remarks. Maybe the issue is literacy? Retention? Comprehension? Dunno, just wondering.
Since there are already apps for the iphone and ipod touch to interface with jmri, and as it would likely only take changing a few lines of code for the ipad, I'm betting it's not far away.
I haven't used DCC before, so I'm not going to argue on the Digitrax issue... .....but iPhones/iPads would be an interesting alternative for DCC control. As for now, I'll stick to playing "Angry Birds" on my iPod touch!
Ha, yes I'm always amused at that. It's like they're announcing "hey everyone....the majority of the buying public can comprehend things faster and better than I can!" It's fine if you use another system, really. We are happy for you.
