I have a proto 2000 alco RS27 with a qsi sound decoder factory installed. several months ago a small short circuit on my clubs layout cut the sound volume of the engine reving. The magnet reset of the volume has not restored it The bell and horn were not effected and are at the highest setting. Is there a CV that controls this function and what is it if you know. I have lost the manuals for this loco. I have two, the other in acting normally. Thanks

I keep electronic copies of all my decoders' manuals on my hard drive in My Documents under 'Decoder Manuals'. Makes for a handy reference. They are all available on line at the manufacturers' sites. Look for Manuals or References, or Technical.

QSI decoders can be reset by magnet, reed switch removal, or by programming three CV's in sequence. Also, the power must be shut off to the tracks afterwards and then restored for everything to be reset properly. Many forget this important step.

For a factory defaults restore, if you don't know about the magnetic wand, or it doesn't provide for it in your version, or if you can't access the reed switch, enter Programming on the Main and then:

    Set CV 49 to 128
Set CV 50 to 255 and
    Set CV 56 to 113

When you enter the last digit, the decoder should go silent, maybe flash lights, or toot three times. If your system does not remove track power, do it yourself, wait two three, and then restore the power to the rails. You should be all set to begin re-addressing the engine, setting master volume using CV's 49 and 51, and so on.

Thanks Crandel. I'll try it next week. The loco is up at my club.

My wife's cousin's son (got all that?) is autistic and loves trains. I let him run my Broadway Limited AC6000CW with the QSI sound and he was a little too enthusiastic with the horn. After a while, some of the sounds started cutting out. I contacted the tech support people and they had me reset CV-8 to factory default and everything worked fine. It's OK if you don't play with CV's all that much, but at least it got everything working again.
