I need some info on beer can tank cars. Like what year where they used and what where they used for. I have a few GATX, CGTX and Eastman Chemicals in black and also have a few in white Geigy and FMC Chemicals. Where they used by major RR like Chessie or just short line RR or just chemical plants. Thanks for any input on this.
"Modern" beer can tanks (8k gallon range) started appearing in the late 1960s, IIRC. As for their use, it depends on the design. Some were built for chemical service, hauling high-density liquids. Others, like NACC's design, were intended for corn syrup, specifically hauling small quantities for smaller food/beverage processors that lacked the capacity to handle "full" size tanks of syrup.
Thanks guys. The reason I was asking is because I've heard that they are modern tank cars but I didn't know how modern and I never seen one in real life. I'm planning on using a few in a Chessie consist.
Speculation: I respect your desire for historical accuracy. I wonder if the Atlas N Scale version is a "generic / composite / aggregate" of the many types ever produced and not an exact car. Possibly the most you can determine would be when a given paint scheme might have existed.
I asked some time ago if the beer can tank car was based on a prototype or a fantasy car on another site, have a look -> http://forum.atlasrr.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=60345 Which lead to here (pictures posted of the prototype) -> http://forum.atlasrr.com/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=40716&SearchTerms=beer
I am wondering too I have roundhouse (not atlas) versions it looks like typical 60s gatx style I found a real picture
Late 1960s is about right for the start of the Approximate Time Period. By my reckoning, the Atlas model was the first of the "Second Generation" of their rolling stock production.
Living in my area and all the traveling I've done (stock car racing, USN, vacations, etc.), I always thought it was strange that I had NEVER seen one of these !!! Then I spent 24 hrs. at Rochelle 11 years ago. Saw solid trains of 9 million of 'em on the UP, all headed East !!! No idea where they were going to, or coming from. It was just cool to finally see 'em, and as short as they are, they made LOTSA' noise crossing the double diamonds !!! Now you'll have to excuse me. After reading about this particular type of freight car, I have suddenly become very thirsty !!!:teeth:
