Hello All, I am new to model railroading. I live in an area with lots of lichen. According to How to Build Realistic Model railroad Scenerythe chemical glycerin should be used to help preserve the lichen. Is there another inexpensive substitute for glycerin?
I did an online search and found 16 fluid ounces (one quart; about one liter?) for less than ten dollars. I haven't looked at the process, but I thought the glycerin was diluted prior to dipping the lichen. This is an old-time Linn Wescott procedure and works well, AFAIK. If you have a lot of lichen around, it should be a good source of trees.
I used glycerin too. About 20 years ago I used it together with formalin. Nowadays I would no longer use formalin. Wolfgang
Try this site, very good info on preparing lichen and coloring it as well if you like. Good luck and have fun. TerraGenesis: Lichen - Preparation PeteC
