Rain Scene

Has anyone ever made a rainy model railroad scene?

I'm curious how this would look and how it would be done. I think a fall scene that looks as if it had just rained would look pretty interesting, perhaps even awesome! All those colors that are a treat to the eyes in the first place ... and then looking wet/glossy.

I ask this because trains in snow is the most beautiful sight for me ... with trains in the rain being a close second. I just never recall ever seeing a rain modeling scene. It's the snow and rain scenes that stand out in my mind when I tagged along with my father as a maintainer on the PRR & PC. So fond are those memories, I seek out snow and rain scene photos just to feel better when feeling a little blue. Works wonders for me

(I posted this on another model railroad forum as well in case it may look familiar) I want the best chance of more eyes seeing this post to see if anyone has done this type of project. Also, I'll post in the N scale area. Thank you for understanding my method

 

I have seen his in a book published by Kalmbach. I dont know what the title was but it was something to do with scenery. The rain scene was done by Mike Danneman. And I think he even had spots in the backdrop to simulate lighting. It was rigged up by a light behind the backdrop that would flash of some type to simulate this. I have the book somewhere at home. I will see if I can find it and let you know the exact title of it.

 

I too have always wanted to model a snow scene, just because it is so rarely done. I think you will find this layout interesting.

Yes I've done rainy scenes. I've used gloss varnish for wet platforms and roads, supplemented with water for greater effect when taking the photos. The varnish dulled very quickly in the dusty location of the layout.









I'd have other images somewhere. Probably on my other hard drive.

The only change I would make is to darken the scene a little.

I have a picture of an Illinois Central business train in a snow scene. The stillness, the isolated feeling, the frostiness, the angle of the shot, is STRIKING!
I was so moved by the scene, I eventually got into a conversation with the photographer.

I'll send a copy, if you are interested.

As far as rain scenes, we would have to contact a certain Mr Kincaid.

Trains in snow is my fave, but next best is a wet train scene in the fall. All the eye candy of the colorful wet leaves, the bark on the trees get darker in contrast, wet roads ... & the smell of fall in the air. It just doesn't get any better than that.

There was a shot of the V&O in MR a few years back showing a rain scene. All it needed was the steam coming of the ground ( you know typical southern weather lol) letting you know just how darn muggy it was about to be.

I prefer model rain.I DO NOT like getting wet at work lol.

 

I think if one modeled small layouts, such as those advocated by the late Carl Arendt, you could easily experiment with rain and snow scenes. The examples show here were superb.
