I am now on day 9 on this scratch build. After buying more supplies on Friday the prgress continues. I have it all glued together now & I have added a section of styrene painted concrete to add a wood water tower on the left. The main structure is just about finished & ready to add stain & weathering to show age. I am going to add tall timbers up to the pump house to install a ladder & a cat walk in the rear. I added 4 1.5 volt lights to go out side & will be powerd by a D cell battery. More pics to come in a few days.
Looking real good. It would be much easier to follow this if you didn't start a new thread for every update.
Thx for the remarks, Sorry for all the new threads on this subject. I'll admit it...its lazyness on my part for not going back to original threads...pathetic huh? I will keep adding to this one guys. Thx again.
Moving along now on day 10 of building. Today I added stain along with a few more cross beams. I also added brass etched ladders, cat walk & hand railings. Tomorrow I will stain the new cross beams & add the coal to the hopper in the rear of the the tipple. I think its time to build the water tower as well. Alot of small details. In a few days I should have my order from Walthers, in it is a 1950 chevvy coal dump truck. Perfect for supplying coal to this tipple......stay tuned, more to come!
Day 11 Coal Tipple gets water tank base Today is day 11 on this scratch build, with the coal tipple pretty much done (less weathering) I moved onto starting the water tower base. I looked on line at some proto types & found one with many cross beams for support. I think the many cross beams on this structure give it more charachter. Again I ran out of supplys, so to Caboose Hobbies I go on Friday. My plan is to glue thin strips of balsa wood to a paper towel roll & I will us laser cut adhesive shingles for the top or roof made from cardboard (cereal box). I will also CA glue strands of wire about 1/4" apart from bottom to top around the wood strips on the tank itself.
Wow, that's looking great! Once you got working on the roof and, what I'm guessing is the coal elevator room up above the main tipple structure, it all came together quite well. And I like the progress on the water tower. I knew I was saving all of those paper towel and toilet paper tubes for something!
I'm definitely the same way. I just built a laptop computer shelf that mounts to the steering wheel out of spare bits and pieces around the house (useful for times when waiting for the wife and/or kids at appointments... not when driving, of course!). And I was thinking of using a leftover piece of plastic pipe to make a fuel storage tank for my engine facility in the yards. The McGuyver genes are very dominant in my family... :tb-wink:
No new pictures to show yet, Iam on day 13 of this build. Last night I weatherd the structure so it would have an old used look. I used a water based indian ink. I used an eye dropper & just let the water/ink saloution flow where it wanted as it found all the corners. Today, I started building the sanding house, open pit & tower. I will post pics latter on. I cut all my balsa wood strips, soaked them in my stain & now they are drying on a paper towel. I cut a small section (1") of styrene hollow tube & glued 2 flat ends of styrene on each end. Letting the glue drie so I can sand the ends round. More to come soon...
Day 13 & still building Ending on day 13 of this build! No, its not the end of the build.....I wish. Today I started building the sand drying house, san pit & sanding station. Sorry these pics are kinda yellowish, but I think the detail is still visible. The house portion is a kit, the maker escapes me right now but I will post it tomorrow. So far not bad for 13 days ago I started from nothing. I will be getting more balsa wood lumber to jump back on the water tank & the rear roof over the coal pit. Keep watching, more to come. I really hope I get 1st place in the contest on June 23rd. After the contest I will install this on my lay out.
Day 15 on building. Now I find myself in day 15 of this build. I have the sandig portion of this done, the roof over the rear coal pit & I started adding the wood strip to the water tower. I added a man standing on the cat walk holding the railing looking down. I only have about 20% more to build & its all on the water tank. The very last thing I will do is add sand to the sanding pit & coal to the coal pit. I hope to have this done this week end, I am waiting on 64" of self adhesive shingles to come in the mail so that might hold me up. Check out the pics, more to come soon.
So I guess this thread is dead & no one else is no longer interested. RE; lack of comments. Or maybe im doin such a good job that no one has any comments. Am I the only one out here? Lol.....oh well.
Naahhh, not dead at all (actually, I'm in NYC for my 10th anniversary so net access has been limited). This is looking AMAZING! It's funny, when you first started I thought it looked so-so and wondered how you might finish it (this is before you added the roof and coal elevator parts). But now it looks fantastic! Can't wait for the grand finale.
Today is day 16 on this build. Today I added the roof to the water tank. After I stained the wood tank I cut some silver electrical wire & stripped the plastic sheeth off. I then wraped the strands around the outside of tank from botton to top about 1/4" apart. This simulates holding the wood planks together. I also added some wires to the coal chute in front. On the sanding spout I added some thread to simulate a hose to sand the locamotives. After I pourd some plaster in the sand & coal pit I then glued (white glue) some sand & cut coal in the pits. I am still waithing on my shingles to come in the mail to finish my water tank. I also bought a metal 1950 model a truck kit so I can deliver coal to the pit. I will take some new pics today & post them. If I had my shingles I could finish this today....so I hope by Tuesday.
Almost done! Day 16 new pics. I found some time to take some new pictures on this 16th day of this scratch build. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! As I stated in my last post, all I have left is to add the shingles to the water tank & I have 3 men toadd to the sand & coal piles shoveling debris. Still a bit more to come. I will start a new thread on my Grand Finalle.
