This is gonna happen. This is the row of historical buildings on my side of the street. There is more in a row across the street that are just as fantastic as these. I am gonna build this row and probably across the street for my main street on my layout. My building is the 3rd from the right (the green one right next to the Reames sign. ) This is an absolutly beautiful street.
I grew up in a small prairie town in Nebraska that had these buildings on all four sides of the town "square", and the square block in the center was/is taken up by a huge old Gothic Victorian court house. To this day..........I STILL have a "thing" for DPM buildings (lol) BEST OF LUCK with your building!!
As an architecture major, I totally approve of that street scape. As a model railroader, I totally approve of making a model of it. Good luck, while a DPM structure could get you close to the look of the building, a scratchbuilt model would be incredible. Look at http://www.nscalelimited.com/ for ideas about construction. BTW I wanna give a angry finger out to the people who hacked into a model railroading website.
Yep, that main street is awesome. The other side of the road is just as impressive. My two favorite in that line are mine, and the one next to it (the white one that shares the alleyway with my building.) Both, I am lead to believe are older than the others by a few years (I am told about 1835-1845, the other's showing up between (1848-1860). And DPM kits, I have always loved. I have damn near every building they put out of the past several years, including most of the gold series sets. I love building those kits. I have dreamt of owning one of those types of buildings since I was a kid.
IF your going scale watch the DPM buildings as they are compressed height wise. I had to redo my fire escapes to fit on them. They have if I remember right 12 foot first floors use 9-6 on all the upper floors not the 12 foot as normal. Even you said your building as 11 ft ceilings on second floor. The DPM building do look great but are short so you might not get all the details of that great facade on one. Love your building by the way and the best of luck with it, looked at one like it in Florance Colorado not long ago. rich
Actually, mine might be 12' ceilings. I hadn't put a tape to measure them to be sure. But I know they are at least 11', so they may very well be 12' ceilings. The 2nd floor ceilings look just as high as the first floor. That front door you see on the front goes within inches of the ceiling height, so that front door is also between 11'-12' tall. Thats why it looks so narrow, but in reality, it is a standard 36" door. As far as the DPM buildings, I will start out with one of those for the layout. But I like the idea of building a doll house scale, and that one would be as close to scale as I can get.
N scale limited got hacked, you can see it messed up if you google search for it. The webmaster had to spend days undoing the damage. Sorry that was a tangent. The reason why i mentioned it because I was trying to find an article on that that might have helped tudor. I found the article that I was thinking of on that site. http://www.nscalelimited.com/2011/02/06/willmodels-billiard-palor/ is one of the most realistic brick structure models I've seen and maybe gives ideas how to modify a DPM to be similar to Tudor's new place. Cricket's saloon http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/51100/page/2 might be a good starting place, but you might have to scratchbuild the awesome unique cornices on your building.
Yep, I was looking at Cricket Saloon. I actually have one of those, and it is the closest DPM so far. There is another (can't remember the name), that I also have has the tall side door like my building does, but it's on the wrong side, and that building is not as close as cricket saloon. I'm sure I can cut on the both of them and take that edge with the side door and put it on the saloon, and make it pretty close, then just work on the detail work and cornices. That may very well be my best option for a small scale for my layout..

Hey pick whatever scale your comfortable with.Not responding as a model RR I just wanted to say I like the old school approch to living upstairs and a business downstairs.It's a dying breed,Best to you in your new home/business venture and ofcourse the new RR. I think it's a very cool deal and idea I hope the downtown is engourged with shoppers and a nice existance unfolds for you ... :thumbs_up:
Thanks. I am also old school like that, and hate that the idea of small town business has been dying a slow death in the US, when it is what built the USA (that, and of course Railroads). I want to try to preserve our history the best I can, and have always dreamt of having a building like this to do my part. Of course having a 1700 sq ft basement to live another dream of mine (no limitations layout.. ) is a huge plus.. hehheh
