My son found a place selling Athearn 5-pack of Thrall hoppers in D&RGW road name, so we bought a pack to increase our total to 20 cars.

We have visions of implementing a loads-in empties-out scheme somewhere in our layout, and my son recently convinced me to rip out a lot of our oldest track (which was a tight radius spaghetti bowl) in order to make room for some industrial sites in the vacated space to enable this. We are thinking a coal mine and some kind of coal-burning plant, and some kind of mountain between them to disguise it.

Delaying our plans is my total lack of experience in creating any type of scenery (mountains, embankments, etc). Probably could use a good pointer to an idiot's guide to getting started on this part.

The ridiculously steeply graded loop (with 9.75" radius curves!!) which was a key feature of the first part of our layout, installed in 2004 when it consisted of a single homosote board installed in a drawer under a bed, is among the track slated for removal. The homosote boards were moved to a much larger space in our basement during the last year, and this steep loop has been rarely used ever since that move. It is still there but is currently "embargoed" by the local railroad company, so it can't last long. Local railfans have been taking pictures, but the railroad company has been less nostalgic, especially its 14 year old VP who heads up new business development.

I just bought everything model railroad related from an estate. The train room had an 11' x 10' HO layout modeling the Sumpter Valley Railroad. (And I thought I was getting rid of my HO stuff.) *sigh* Many of the items will be finding their way to eBay.

I bought two things at the same time. I Micro Trains SP slant-cupola caboose that's getting superdetailed (new running boards, separate grabs, toolbox, FineNScale interior, Nn3 couplers, low-pro metal wheelsets and a new smokejack) sometime this month, and a Tsunami Medium Steam sound decoder and speaker for one of my brass FEF-3's...a two-tone gray 844 to pull my Overland Limited east out of Ogden which I'm making up before the SLC October NMRA Show. FUN!!

    Cheers!

Used it today. Will take a bit of practice.

My latest purchase - at yesterday's train show at Dover High School in Dover, NJ - was the purchase of a NJ Transit physical characteristics book for five bucks. While it's almost two decades out of date, I figure it will prove helpful if NJT likes my job application and hires me.

Got a 4 pack of green heavyweight Rio Grande passenger cars, by Lima, via eBay.
Fit in nicely with the Rivarossi 4 stripe cars I have!
Photos later. In too much ankle pain now.

    Today I bought:

-Delaware Hudson U23B on eBay (scored a good price on a "like new" unit) right before I left the house to go to work.
-1952 GMC Bottle Truck made by Showcase Miniatures from LHS after work. A bit pricey at $10 but unique item.
-1949 Mercury and 1953 Chevrolet by Pacific N Scale from LHS after work.

I'd say it has been a productive day for me! :)

Does buying something on reservation count?

I read in the forum here about Athearn's reissue of the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy with DCC and sound. Not sure whether it was the drugs (just had 2 wisdom teeth pulled) or what, but I reserved one at about 11 PM last night. I can't wait, even though I know I have to!

And this from a guy who runs 100% relatively modern diesel. Oh well, I've saved my original freight cars and caboose given as Christmas present about 1970-71, and know I'll have a proper locomotive to pull them with!

    Onward into steam!!!

Got the D&H U23B today and it is new! The wheels and contact strip where it contacts the truck assemblies don't have marks. The bonus is that it was decoder equipped from Atlas and the seller was probably not well versed with trains since it wasn't advertised with it. Nice score at $47.99 shipped.

A couple of the modern roundhouse kits yesterday. Now that Athearn is rerunning the Big Boy and Challenger, I'll need a place to put them.
Today I picked up the two latest Kato Maxi IVs in Pacer Stacktrain. To run behind my Big Boy? Sigh.....
