Welcome to Trainboard. I am not a steam fan, but I do like what I see. Hopefully some steam guy can chime in later.

Looks good. What mechanism will you be using for the loco? I am assuming you'll be making a class J based on the tender.

    YouTube Berkshire

Kevin smith did a great series on building a z scale Berkshire.

You can find the whole thing on YouTube. Just search for "Z scale Berkshire"

It might give you some ideas and inspiration. So far, the J tender looks good!

Actually, if you just do a simple search for "kevsmith" on this forum you will find his progress posts and links to all of his videos. Just look for any thread that include the word Berkshire. There are several of them, at least 9 or 10. Below is the link to the first thread.

Your tender looks great. Keep us posted.

Welcome to thread. Nice to see someone else having a go at scratchbuilding Z steam locos. Actually we have more in common as the Nickel Plate Road was bundled into the Norfolk & Western in the 1960s. the tender is looking really good.

For those of you who are wondering what's happening to the Berkshire I've had to take a break from Z scale modelling for a short while to concentrate on scanning in a lot of my E6 Colour transparencies that are starting to deteriorate really badly. I've probably shot 30,000 railway pictures since the mid 1970s but it seems to be the ones from the early 90s that are suffering.

This is one after cleaning up 'Taw valley' rebuilt Southern 'West Country' class 4-6-2 blasts through Dore & Totley station in Derbyshire on a mid winter railtour

Anyway I got all the stuff out this weekend ready for a show with 'Cuyahoga' next week in Bradford. Yorkshire and gave the Berk a run out so I'm probably inspired to crack on with it and get it finished although I spent a fair bit of time last night weathering and graffiti-ing all of the 60ft Hycubes I got in the recent AZL sale.

I don't know how I never received any of these comments. Kev, it was your videos on the berkshire that inspired me to build my J. I have watched them many times trying to pic up new tips each time lol. Thanks for the comment! I look forward to seeing an update from you on youtube.

    Take care
    Aaron

I somehow missed all the replies to this thread until now. It was Kev Smiths videos of his berk that inspired me to build my J. I am using a Marklin mikado as a starting point for the engine and of course it needs to be highly modified but hopefully it will work without to many problems.

    Thanks

Welcome to Z scale! Scratchbuilding N&W models? I hope you'll build an Y6b, one of my absolute favourite steamers with Big Boys, Challengers, AC12s and and Santa Fe's Class 3800 and 3900 2-10-2s!

That's next! I'm using the marklin br96 running gear since it's an 0-8-8-0 and the y6b is a 2-8-8-2. I try to utilize as many factory options that are available, I try not to make my own running gear if I don't have to.

    Thanks
