I'm planning on building a new N-scale layout in my basement soon, I'm having trouble coming up with some ideas for the bench work, how to get the most out of my room. My room is 15'X15' with on window in it that has to be left accessable. I will be running 89'er's & 86'er's so the curves shouldn't be so tight. I wanna put in a helix to access a stagging yard. I want to put in a good sized yard (stub or not) (not sure!) maybe 6 -10 tracks to serve my intermodel (Piggyback) operations. Any ideas will help.........

This N scale layout is about 12X16. The design is multi-deck, but the main deck might give you an idea of roughly the scope that fits in your space.

As you probably know, an intermodal terminal (where containers are added to/removed from railcars) is laid out very differently from a typical classification yard (as is shown in the above example). So you would have a different design depending on whether the yard you describe is the working intermodal terminal or the classification yard that would support the working intermodal terminal.

    Best of luck.

    Hi,
since you want the most out of your room, another plan by Byron Henderson "the Everett & GN" might be to simple.
It could be a great choice when you don't need to satisfy quite a crew of operators.
I drew a N-scale version with a 16" minimum radius for a 14 x12 ft space. Though even larger radii, like 18" or 20" would be nice.

Guys thanks for the plans, should help me get some ideas going. I really like those helixes you used in the plan Byron, nice. As for my yard, I wanted to go with a "Bluefield" (Norfolk Southern,WV) ish kind of yard with a single or double load/unload track(s) for my Piggyback/container trains. Most of the yard would be for coal cars/trains coming and going, with general freights and Amtrak passing through.
