The Intermountain 60' chain tie down flatcars have the stand up wheel hand brake. The majority of the TTX cars I've loaded with our farm tractor project have all been converted to the side sill mounted lever hand brake. Did any of the parts manufacturers produce this detail part in N scale? Thanks Joe
Go to sales@nscalekits.com. When I was building some flat cars they had several different type. Email them and they can send you some photo's of what they have.
I'm guessing that you're talking about the ratchet-style brakes like the one mounted on this flat: http://www.railcarphotos.com/PhotoDetails.php?PhotoID=44843 oldscout is right that N Scale Kits 89' flats have this style of brake, but it is a cast-on detail, so might not be any easier than scratch-building one. I think the Micro-Trains 89' flat is the same way. Some of the more recent vendors of long flats (BLMA, Trainworx, and Atlas) might be using separate parts for this detail, especially the new Atlas trash flats, but you'd probably have to contact the manufacturer directly. The brake style that N Scale Kit where add on details. They sent me several photo of the different types that they sell. I do not remember what they cost but looked really good. The email said to ca them on.

The N Scale Kits 89' flats definitely have cast-on ratchets, but it looks like the newer welded rail flats have a separate ratchet that might be suitable: Peter at NSK is very helpful so it's worth sending him an email. Keep us posted on what you find - I'm interested in the same conversion. -Gary
