I myself am currently looking to do the 1947-1949 GS with the SP E7's in the beautiful Daylight Red and aluminum paint. I have the SP E7 A-B-B set #6000A,B,C currently in the paint booth. I will also have the Tucumcari-Chicago portion being pulled by RI 4-8-2's of which #4055 is in the bash/build stage.

    Anyways:
A Kato smoothside 6-6-4 is a match for the Rock Island prototype; an SP articulated diner was known to make an appearance so a Kato unit there is available; http://www.unionstationproducts.com/_4127a_1.html <----this Rock Island observation was converted to mid train use as a buffet in '56; an SP hamburger grill/lounge was used in your period of whch Union Station Products also carries; SP 10-6(blunt end); RI and SP heavyweight baggage in Pullman green and an SP heavyweight baggage in Daylight colors was seen sometimes as well so Micro Trains and others have you covered there; SP 44 person chair car of which Union Station Products again also carries; the RI 72 seat coaches are produces by Kato as their smoothside coach(you would only need to take out a few seats if you really wanted to get prototypical).

The GS had usually 7-8 sleepers in the winter from '55-'59 and 3-5 in the summer during that time usually RI 6-6-4's, SP 10-6's, and Pullman 12 double bedrooms and 8-6's. Hope this helps!

I started an under developed article, but it does list a consist and has a great link to the Rock Island Technical Society's page on the train here:

The Golden State is a funny train in N scale. Almost all the key specialty cars (dorm, diner, obs) and the sleepers are available in plastic... but the coaches arn't! That's different from most trains one tries to assemble in N where the basic coaches and sleepers are available but the specialty cars need to be built.

Are the car ends red or silver?

Don't know of many trains that are well covered coach and sleeper wise... not sure what you were referring to here. Many trains don't even have car sides possible...

Looks like a fun one. This SP confusion of profusion in paint schemes is pretty foreign to me. I'm working on a Santa Fe Oil Flyer with green, shadowlined, two tone gray and fluted stainless cars. If I could justify one in the short-lived Valley Flyer scheme that would just about be every passenger car paint scheme the road used in the whole twentieth century!

Just out of curiosity, are you going to use SP or CRI&P power?

Those are some amazing pictures - where did you find them?

I've been wondering the same thing, and those pictures make it clear that those two cars, at least had silver ends.
There are many pictures that show that the heavyweights (and Harrimans) used on the Golden State also had silver ends.
The Red & Silver E7s definitely had RED ends however.

I wonder if the SP and RI were consistent about the car ends?

Most models seem to have red ends, except the Con-Cor models (they're silver). The cars I've painted all have red ends - so do the Intermountain/Centralia cars (although they're a funky red tending towards hot pink).

Here's the thing - on the real train, all the streamlined cars had full-width diaphragms when they were painted red and silver, so no one would see the end color anyway.

I built my 1950 GS from a combo of M&R and Union Station (1 car-12 DBR) car sides. I also used 2 of the Kato 6-6-4's. I built up an SP consist. The Atlas observation and baggage dorm are cars usded on the GS.They are cars owned by the Rock Island. Which I do plan on painting up for my train.

If you want to do a GS in post 1955 paint- it'll be simulated stainless steel with the red letter boards. As SP started to repaint the cars in 1953. There may have been a car here and there left with the red/silver paint in '55.

One interesting note. The red/silver painted E7's never pulled a complete stream lined GS. As they painted in their "Daylight" scheme before the complete trainset could be delivered.

I'll set up my train and take some photos. They are not 100% finished- I need to do something with the interiors.

I do have a couple of photos in my gallery.

    Enjoy,
    Wolf
