I've been building models since I was young and an currently building a small shelf switching layout. I've wanted the chance to try a few new techniques I've learned and my brother had this rock that looked like the perfect small mine. I left most of the rock unseniced and made it removable as well. The dio is a mere 3x5 inches. I cut up and added better detail to the Bachmann Worker figures and scratchbuild a few of the details. I thing it turned out pretty well for a first time using this technique to make trees and use a homemade static grass applicator. Still parts of it don't look good to me, what could I do better next time?
I think it looks great too... BUT... I actually find your modeling of the area around the 'real' rock to be more believeable than the rock itself. Perhaps you will use the real scenery items ONLY as a reference and do everything using your modeling skills. The 'real' rock is actually not as believeable because the rock looks out of scale... the imbedded sediments don't scale properly.
Nice ! I like it too. I think you could improve the appearance of the real rocks though by embedding them in the scenery with a bit of plaster....Mike
Thanks for the comments. I will not be using real rocks for scenery on my layout, the dio was ust used to showcase this one. My brother was really happy with it and I was glad to get some experience doing a few things I had never tried before.
I have no rock faces modeled, but all of the rocks on my layout are real. From house size to what shows in dry stream beds. They do need to be of the correct colors and textures though. And very few just lay on the surface, but are imbedded or soil is added around them to give the look of them being part of the land as in real life.
Nice job there and attention to detail which makes the entire scene come to life. Keep it going and you just might end up with a Railroad.
