Seeing how I am trying to find out what trains are worth. What would a 59 UP Pony Express set in the box with all of the cars in their boxes and the track and transformer still in the box be worth?

I don't recall the set. It would help to know who made it, what scale, approximately how old. You'd need to do some research. SpookShow, may have some information and can give you some ideas on the value. Do a oogle google search to see what pops up.

Here is the results of my search: http://www.target.com/s/express+tra...0787&KID=40627206-bd48-0d09-9b9c-00005cb061ee

I did find refrences to my Little Pony train sets...?
    I hope that helps.

    Depends upon condition, condition, condition.

    Rarity.

Numbers of those who'd like to have it, competing to buy your item.

If I recall this set correctly, it should be above average on the desire list for AF collectors.

After further research and going through some old wig wags. Yes, I do remember the set. Let's see if I can desribe it? S scale, American Flyer, a small 0-4-0 locomotive with some early celestory roof passenger cars and green in color (and I mean a pucky green). Not the prettiest of sets and it wasn't a real good runniner. However, this is considered by many to be a collectors item. The question you'd have to answer is: Why would I want it? Next question: How much would I pay for it? Even as a collectors item it ain't pretty, isn't anywhere near prototypically correct but more of a kids fun toy. That's what it was built for. Basically an answer to one of Lionel's toy train sets IMSMC a Western Theme, 4-4-0 locomotive, with yellow passenger cars. A much better buy.

    That should help.

Perhaps he could post a few photos for us? Or some catalog numbers? Are these only in individual boxes? Or a set box as well?

This set is a PA1A powered, PA1A dummy with five passenger cars, in the UP colors. The cars are all in the boxes and all of the cars plus track and power pack are in the big box. They were played with and put back in the box when done.

These are the items I was thinking you had. In this instance, depending upon the condition of boxes and rolling stock, it's probably worth at least many hundreds of dollars and could go even higher.

It's been years since I've tried to place a value on Lionel. The same value system for Lionel will work for AF. From memory this is what will be taken into consideration. Mint of course is in the box with no signs of wear. Like new is close to mint but the wheels will show signs of use. Then it goes down from there. Important thing is lack of rust or corrosion. Wear from the box will be a factor. Cracks, scratches and chips will be taken into account. Fading of paint shouldn't be a problem since they were re-boxed after use. The number on the cars will be important.

Again a member from TCA (Train Collectors Association) or TTOS ( Toy Train Operating Society) could help.
