Next to the Amtrak station there is a working scrap yard. There is a machine that shreds cars and other large metal objects and sends the pieces to a convayer belt that goes to either a railcar or truck. The station is above the scrap yard so it's looking down on the operation from teh Vancouver depot

I bought a few things for my scrap yard. I have built the ferrous shear but not without difficulty. It says it's easy to build. It's not...at least for me it wasn't. For example: The instructions left out part 14. It was almost finished before I realized I had a missing part...part 14...A part that should have been glued in place much earier. Thankfully I was able to get it in place and save the project. I looked back over the instructions but could not find part 14 mentioned anywhere. Now I'm building the baler. I'll let you know how that turns out.

One product I like a lot is Instant Rust from a company called Sophisticated Finishes. That's what I used to convert some old plastic toy cars to junkyard-worthy models:

I took a tip from a magazine article and cut the hoods from a couple of the cars with a razor saw so I could open them up. On these cars, the windows were solid plastic, so I used a sharp Dremel tip to remove them. I sprayed the cars with a dark brown primer (not rust) and touched up some shiny spots with silver paint. Then, I used Instant Rust to finish them. Instant Rust is a combination of "Instant Iron," a fine emulsion of iron in some kind of solution, and an oxidizer which rusts it. Because you "paint" the iron on, it can be used on any surface, and you can use it to highlight individual items in a heap. And, nothing looks more like rust than rust.

Also used instant rust on this little wooden 1:22,5 scale engines
    I´ve lasercutted and engraved.

I´ve added some more plys of rust and oxidizer later .

Instead of the oxidizer supplied with the rust color, I sometimes use
vinegar essence - rusting lasts longer - but the rust looked quite different.

    Wow. These look interesting...
I don't think I have the critter skills of a randgust, but I might just possibly be able to cobble at least an unpowered facsimile of something like this in N scale 2-foot gauge. Maybe animate it back and forth a little on a hidden rod or groove in roadbed... I am not exactly sure where I could use it on my layout under construction which represents an island seaport with little or no process industry. But its worth grabbing these pics and saving them for reference. Thanks for sharing, Harald.

1 Loco - the green one - got an old Fleischmann 040 steam engine H0 chassis
    [IMG]

1 Loco - the one in the middle of my first pic got an old 040 PIKO H0 diesel chassis
and Rusty - without engine - was glued to the chassis of an old H0 tipping wagon

Doing it in in H0-scale I would use N-scale chassis - as H0n30
And in N-scale - I would try an old Maerklin Z-scale engine

An early stage of rusting - pics taken a few days before the ones I posted first.

You can still see the grey iron-paint

starts rusting a few hours later and lasts some days.

Herald, are you saying the rust only lasts some days or the the process of rusting takes a some days?

This is not a powder chalk or anything like that. It's a piece of gray plastic that I added rust to. Do you like it? Do you know what it is?

Its no rusty paint - it´s real rust.
The grey paint contains iron - and this iron will rust. Slowly.

Therefore You have to wait several days till the finish is okay after painting with the grey iron-colour and adding oxidizer..
Sometimes You need to ad more oxidizer after a few days - sometimes more of the grey iron paint.

If You first apply the iron paint - add oxidizer - let it dry - add oxi again - let it dry again and spray a thin layer of normal paint over it, rust will appear throu the paint - looking very natural - after some das - sometimes later.
    :)

The look may still cqhange after a few years - but not much .
    bye

    Harald
