Has anyone out there upgraded the DCC chip and added sound to this engine? I really want to run this Mallet with sound and was curious if anyone had some experience. Ben
I just upgraded mine with an MRC 1956, The speaker fits nicely in the front of the tender (Speaker dirctly under the coal bin) and the decoder on top of the DCC circuit board in the Vandy Tender I just wired it straight in and it works great. Did you need something specific?? Happy to help. Andy
Andy, you are my hero! So do you have a dcc and a sound dcc chip in the tender? The last Bachmann DCC I had to replace the chip immediately so my concern was space a little bit.
The MRC 1956 is a Steam Sound DCC decoder. You remove the Bachman Decoder (number the wires in case you want to use it in something else) and install the new DCC with Sound decoder. Here is a chart with the color codes and wire numbers. I got it all in there with a little room to spare. the speaker size concerned me but it went right into the tender no problem. Andy
Your's is N Scale? The Bachmann chip I removed from my other loco, you just broke off the chip and left the rest of the circuit board. I haven't seen one where you remove wires.
Did you remove the Vandy Tender cover?? When I removed mine there was a wired decoder. I unsoldered it and reinstalled the new one. Yes mine is N-scale, Andy
So, have you got a vid you can post of this engine? Am wondering how the MRC sound is before aking the dive into dcc......
Any update on a video or pictures of this? I'm at the National N scale convention and am pondering getting n N scale 2-6-6-2, but I only get engines that I can install sound decoders in. Also, thank you for your service Senior Chief.
