Question for all you rail fans out there... How much of the old CSX heritage like Chessie, Seaboard, Western Maryland, and maybe Clinchfield do you see out there today? When I see a train I occasionaly spot a chessie system covered hopper or two and also some family lines systems covered hoppers. Is this all that is left? Do any of you see any more than this. Covered hoppers is about it that I've seen. I was just wondering. I was thinking about going out and trying to take photos of these old cars just so I'll have them documented. I wish I had a photo of every locomotive and freight car I used to watch go by on the now extinct CSX (old L&N) line that ran through my hometown when I was a kid.

I have seen some Clinchfield coal hoppers on the CSX(former B & O main line) adjacent to the CTA Orange Line rapid transit in the past year or two. Caught my eye right away!

That's awesome. I need to get a good camera to keep with me just so I can shoot a picture if I happen up on some old CSX freight cars.

Regularly see Fam Lines, Chessie 60' high cubes that run between Louisville and the east coast carrying GE appliances.

CSX has what I call a storage yard here in Grand Blanc MI. You get to see alot of cars not in use and just sitting here until needed. Right now a massive ton of covered hoppers are in storage.

How long have those cars been sitting in Grand Blanc? On another site, it was mentioned that the sand hoppers that were stored in Flint had disappeared sometime in the last week or two. The consensus was that they had been put back into service, but maybe they were just moved south a little...?

Regarding the original topic, there still seems to be several CSX predecessor covered hoppers used in the various unit grain trains that go to various elevators in Michigan this time of year.

Digging through my various freight car photos yielded a couple more CSX predecessors. There was a former Family Lines waffle side boxcar through Port Huron (Michigan) last year, and there were a couple of very aged looking ex-L&N 86 foot autoparts boxcars moving on the Grand Trunk through South Bend a couple years ago under HLMX and HCSX reporting marks. It's possible they're already gone though.

If you're looking for these old paint jobs, don't wait too long. Between the various age limits on the older rolling stock still in service and the tendency to either patch paint or repaint cars entirely that some railroads seem to be taking, the oldest paint jobs are disappearing quickly. I'm pretty sure several of the cars I've photographed even in the last five years or so have either been cut up, or seen complete repaints as current owners update or maintain their fleet image.

Charles, there were alot more a couple of weeks ago. I knew something was happening about 4 or 5 days ago when I heard a lot of horn blowing a couple blocks away from my sub. When I shot these there was still about 4 or 5 tracks still full from end to end. Heres a couple more from that days shots.

NYC still in NYC except the numbers are patched. Never heard of the last one. Either he's lost or CSX owns it now. Another Rust Bucket.

NYC... that is a former Conrail car that had been repainted by CSX and given the NYC reporting marks. When CSX and NS split Conrail, CSX used the NYC reporting marks to distinguish their Conrail equipment from NS's ex-conrail equipment.

Winchester & Western... Active shortline runs from Hagerstown, MD to Winchester, VA. Used to primarily haul sand out of Gore, VA but their traffic sources around Martinsburg, WV and Winchester, VA has picked up significantly in the last decade. They also have some trackage in New Jersey and Delaware, IIRC. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?id=WW

This is the kind of stuff I've always been confused about. Why do some cars carry the old reporting marks and why some don't . This was enlightening. Thanks everyone for the photos. Good stuff!
