likes trains. Today, I went to the cabinet where I store my Micro Trains cars and I found that my MoPac 50ft plug box car (with factory air) and my 60 ft hicube SoPac cars were loose in the boxes, plastic holders removed! As I look closer, the MoPac's case was broken...and so was a coupler! I know which daughter did it..now I just have to make her fess up!

Uh oh... somebody is in trouble.... LOL. How old is she? Might be the perfect time to show her, if she is old enough, that if she wants to learn about the trains she needs to get you so you can show her. Curiosity is a good thing, but broken rolling stock isn't! Just be glad it wasn't engine cases!! Good luck, and remember, you may have a future train engineer there!

When my son was 2, he completely disassembled my Kato caboose. Took the railing, the roof walk, the body off the frame, and even took the glass out.

The amazing thing was, HE DIDN'T BREAK A SINGLE PART!!!!!

Dean, she is 7, she can and will get into anything. I moved the locos and MT cars into the bottom drawer of my dresser.

I am hoping that she tells my wife that she does so I can build a layout for "her"....

Cwwr, that would have been me...I did the same to my dad's trains and my brother's model cars

Yeah, them kids! My boy is 26 now and he and I work regularly (once or twice a week) on my modular U.P. layout, attend three shows a year with our layout, and spend a lot of time on various projects such as my kitbashed CA-1 cabooses or his kitbashed, de-skirted GS-3's. He's a rabid SP freak and I'm a confirmed U.P. Transition Era fanatic. Luckily, the SP and UP interchanged in Ogden, which is part of our layout.

Ben and onlooker at the August 2012 Evanston Show with our modular layout.

Oh, by the way, his first word was "caboose". I am lucky to have him still be so interested in N-scale model railroading. :)

    Cheers!

As with any hobby, its good to have children involved and interested. Keeping interest over the years can be difficult. Sometimes that interest disappears for a while but returns as a young adult. The future of a hobby can be determined by its younger members interest. I am also in a national antique car club and gaining and keeping younger members has been a challenge, though its been a little better recently. (I am considered a younger member at 48!) Antique cars can be a different thing all the way around though as you don't modify (for the purist end of the hobby) what you are restoring and not everyone sees an interest in cars. In this hobby, the entire hobby has taken huge leaps and bounds over the last 15-20 years, especially in N scale. DCC and radio control operations has probably made it much more interesting for younger adults and children in this technological age. And, there is just something about trains that both kids and adults love!

Build one for yourself! Invite him over, and run lots of trains!

Have your dad assemble a Thomas the train table for his grandson. When he sees how much fun hiss grandson is having pushing the trains around, he will be thinking that he should build a layout for his grandson. Once he comes up with that excuse, there will be no holding him back.

That is what happened to me 14 months ago :)

Dean, trust me, I understand. I have had a Mustang featured in Modified Mustangs and I help restore a concours correct 1965 K Code that was featured in Mustangs Illistrated....as for antique cars, if they don't have hydrolic brakes, put them in a museum! :p
