Why is this Model Power car so expensive????? http://www.amazon.com/MODEL-POWER-GUAGE-SCALE-COMPANY/dp/B0056SS7Y2
The only reason I can think of is that someone will pay it. It is not a new tank, nor does it have the right couplings. I hope someone will be able to shed some light on the price. Maybe it was a special limited edition or something. shaun
Two possible reasons, or both: The seller is deluded. And there are enough people out there dumb enough to pay that price. Or perhaps he doesn't want to sell it, and instead just likes to see his name up there in front of the world.
I hate to think what it'd be priced at if it was still sealed in its box with the factory air!!!! :startled:
On Amazon, I wonder if some of these sellers (especially the big used book and CD sellers) have a bot or something that uses an algorithm (and not the real world) to set the price. Ive been thinking of listing some books and old CDs on Amazon. If I get any insight into any Amazon rules that might determine how prices are set, I'll be sure to share.
I probably have about ten of these cars all bought for about $3-4 and now with MT trucks and couplers. Three are painted in my Old Hooch Distillery livery for alcohol transport. So if a stock. old but not rare, MP car with crapido couplers can justify that price I should be able to get at least $400 apiece for my custom painted and decaled, with MT couplers and trucks, cars. And shipping will only be $100 per car. I'll even throw in a bottle of rarified air from my N scale Zendo and a whisker from Deekus The Cat.
Amazon and eBay sometimes trade places for, ahem, "overly optimistic" pricing. Private sellers that sell through Amazon list items that are many times the asking price of what can be had on eBay. Sometimes-- as we've seen and documented for 114 pages (so far!) it's the other way around. Even as something as commoditized as digital music downloads, there are price differences between iTunes and Amazon. (I'm not a believer in the "virtual five finger discount".) So for something as "RARE! SCARCE! VINTAGE! COLLECTIBLE!*" as model trains, I can't say I'm surprised... *Your mileage may vary. Compared to oxygen atoms, all model trains are rare, of course.
If I told you what I thought that car was worth, the seller would think it was Lion.... Badump-crash.... (sorry, no emoticon available)
I seriously thought about buying it but I have a policy of only buying things like this in sets of five. So I passed on the single. haha....
If I'ma going to pay that much it better be gold plated. $5.00 is the maximum I would pay. It's no collectors piece unless Lionel made it and it's a tin plate.
Lol !!! U guys have some great comment on this..... Should we make the seller wet him/herself? send that message I really need 5, and at such a great price! too bad you don't have more. (hehehe!)
Look at some of their other listings... lol. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aag/main?i...=ATVPDKIKX0DER&orderID=&seller=A2VMTH481U4BA8 OH, and the "Bay" just for a comparison price... http://www.ebay.com/itm/LION-OIL-COMPANY-TANK-CAR-N-SCALE-MODEL-POWER-/200823898673 I found the ebay version for sale by a private web dealer for $8 with Rapidos and $12 with MTs...
There is another possible scenario, but I doubt it applies to this tank car. Have a friend with 1/25 scale dragster kits from the '70's. His wife said they were worthless and old. Get rid of them. He put them on Ebay, listed them as "Buy Now" for absolutely ridiculous prices. So, at least he could say he tried, ya' know ??? Now he is smiling in a room literally filled with dragsters !!! BTW, has anyone seen the Kato BN SD40-2 on Ebay for $298.00 ??? If you like that, I've got seven of them !!!!
WOW, I have one of those that I'll sell to anyone for half that price...cash on the barrel-head. IIRC, I paid about $5 for it 10-15 years ago.
