Howdy everyone!

So, I might be attempting to get my hands on a Westside ATSF 2-10-10-2 brass loco, an engine I've wanted to get my hands on for a long time. The interesting thing is the one that's available right now is in extremely rough shape; no motor, heavy corrosion and missing some key features.

This is a message I got from the seller when I inquired that pretty well sums it up;

"The loco is missing the motor, shafts, and gearbox from the drive train. Restoration to running condition would be a major task and even at that there's no resource for exact replacement parts. There are no other parts included with the loco that are not shown- just the engine as shown in photos and the box. "

He later added that the gearbox seems to be intact but that no drive train features are present or included.

My basic issue is this; even in it's rough condition this thing is demanding a lot of money, and if I go in I'm going in to win. Should I win this I wanted to ask you guys here, would she be worth restoring and if so, how much money would I be looking at? Is it incredibly hard to restore a brass engine to its former glory? Or better yet, restore it and then paint it up? I love this engine and this is one of the few chances I may have to get one, that's why I'm willing to take a chance on one in poor shape. There could be some potential in there still.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions everyone, thanks again!

I have a few Westside HO locos; one being a HOn3 Shay and the largest is an AC12.
I've been very pleased with the performance of the units and the detail within them is exceptional.
A few years ago I was testing the Shay to see how tight a curve it could run on and it broke a U-joint while negotiating a 9 inch radius curve (but it still made it around!).
I would like to replace the U-joint, but can't find the part(s) anywhere! That's the biggest problem I can see that you face ... getting OE parts. So I've been keeping my eyes open for a junker that someone might have to sell.
I'm sure that there's a way to jury-rig some other brands of drivetrain to operate the loco. You'll just have to be a little creative. And it's amazing what a little paint and lots of TLC can do for a 'wreck'.
If you have been looking for this particular model by Westside specifically, I'd go ahead and shoot for it. The worse thing that can happen is you would not be able to do what you want with it would be to put it up for sale on E-bay yourself. Obviously, if someone is trying to outbid you for it, there's a market for it. Good luck!

the Westside ATSF 3000 series locomotive will need huge huge radii ,otherwise it''ll short it out needs drive train modifications to run on 30" curves but the price is spot on for one in that condition and shouldn't be to difficult to repair hell yes i'd buy it in a heartbeat.
in mint condition thats a $1000 locomotive.......but looking at it its miles away from that.

go for it.

Or a shill working the bids. Be careful here. Some prizes aren't always what they appear to be. Upside the owner is being honest about the locomotives condition. There are guys around who can machine parts and help you get it running. I'd try to get a hold of one of our able bodied, experienced, craftsman and discuss this them. Perhaps Ironhorseman knows of or is able to help you out.

Yeah, I've already been outbid twice. It's already beyond what I'd hoped to get it for now so I might give up. :( I'll not stop searching for one if these though, its like the dream engine for my collection. Maybe I'll get lucky...anyone here have one they'd wanna sell? You'd be giving to a good cause...helping a young enthusiast get his collection started :)

I saw this thread as I was looking for the value of this exact item for a friend who is selling a brand new in the box mint, even the foam is mint. It has never been out of the box, as you can still see the factory packing around the train under the plastic. There is a pic on brasstrains.com of both pieces if you want to make sure this is what you want. Let me know soon as we are packaging the group together to sell as a lot probably next week. Isn't it amazing how things work...God said no you don't need that junk...I have a brand new one for you...lol.

The one on ebay is only showing 1 piece...there are actually supposed to be two.

If you look at the complete ebay add it shows a picture of the correct whaleback tender that belongs to this model.

Howdy! Iggreengirl, I just wanted to let you know i replied to your PM. I would totally be interested but but I highly doubt you or your friend would let a mint one go for what I could really afford realistically, I'm afraid.

Not sure what the post does on a thread that's been moribund for over two years...and if you look in the link, the item has sold.
