I personally have a 5 by 8 foot L shaped layout in a 10 by 10 train room (spare bedroom). Just curious what everyone makes do with out there.

    Welcome aboard!!!
I presently have a 11x12' layout, in a spare room. My next one will require about 22x16' worth of space...

The average size layout in N is smaller than in HO which has been the appeal of the scale in Europe and Japan, and areas in NOrth America of houses and apartments and town houses without basements.

I am building mine in a converted study, now train room. It is one half a 13 by 7 and the other half 13 by 9 1/2, so I never know what size to say the room is. Anyways, right now the layout is double decked, but eventually it will be triple decked with the additional deck underneath the lowest deck now, for staging.

    Welcome to the TB

    Mine is 6' x 4.5' (portable) on a 4" foam base

I think Bill's layout would be my option if I had a choice - maybe with some dogbone ends vs around the room.

EDIT: Only that "small" because thats the largest feasable size for me as a military member that moves every 3 years or so. I have a custom built crate that I use as a table top.

Mine started at about 12' x 12' (and then some) in the 3rd floor of my 3 bedroom townhouse. Well realty set in and it is now a
10 x 4 "L" shaped (37 1/2" deep) in my study sharing space with my computer. Um, I mean it will be this month.

Maybe some day it will move to said bedroom or to the 1st floor, (living and dining room), in which case it will become about 15 x 20, (and about the same deapth.

    Welcome-

    4' x6'2"

Nolan has 18 miles of running track.

Charlie- How come I don't have a rounded membership number like Akers? It is so hard when I fly first class, eat at fine restaurants, stay at the finest five star hotels and rent luxury cars when I can't remember my Trainboard number for the huge discounts offered.

I guess I better feel very good about my space. I have an 11' X 25' room in my basement with a 5'x 8'x extension for the yard area. We currently have plans of moving our bedroom upstairs when one of my kids moves out or we add on to the house. I'm going for the second option that way I can add to the basement. If we do add on we are think some where in the range of a 20x20 addition.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I've always dreamed of having a space about 20 by 30 or larger (what I would need to have my doubletrack main with multiple consists and 50 car trains!). Perhaps the next house we buy will have a basement, but for now I'm content in my little room. Planning and dreaming is half the fun!

    (NScale_Lover--I cleaned up the duplicates)

I'm at 11 x23, on two and three decks. But I've been down as small as 2' x 4', when I didn't have space.

The double decker idea is very appealing. One of my first MR's was an '86 issue featuring Jim Hediger's double deck Ohio Southern (needless to say I was impressed at the age of 12!), but I've since read and studying many of the pitfalls going that route. I think I could live with all of them to get that much more running room though! Hmm, maybe a double decker 20 by 30! Now we're talking!!

    I have a 10 x 8 U shaped layout . I hope in the
future to have something along the lines of 20 x 20.

3' x 6'- 8", portable layout built on a hollow core wood door. My big hope is to be able to figure out how to rig up some temporary staging yard.

The JJJ&E is 4x11' with an L shaped extension.

The main layout is on multiple levels with 100' of mainline track.

    Stay cool and run steam.....

My layout is about 3.5 ft x 8 ft. It's on a 36" x 80" door with an extension on one end. I also built a temporary/portable staging yard that extends from one end. The staging yard is 1 x 8.

The staging yard is discussed and can be seen here:

    The All Day & Night

Square footage would be about 28 for the layout and 8 foot for the staging yard, so that would be 36 sq. ft. total.

Currently running at 2'x8', but would like to extend this to an L shape, or even a little around the third wall to complete the "C" shape.

Mine is a 'G' shape that is in a 7'x19' space in the basement. The actual layout area is ~46 square feet.

15 1/2 X 17 on a single level. I'm having enough trouble making progress on this without adding another level to the mess!

Currently a 4 x 8 with a small 3x3 addition. My first try at a regular "model railroad". In a couple of years I'll be moving, and the new layout, if I have space, will be two doors in an "L" shape. I like my trains to run between two points at the far ends of the layout. Right now I have two nested loops since I run DC.
