I finally built the base and got Unitrack for my small (16"x33") layout that's going to be built in the under-bed storage box. Here is the layout:

The red circles are insulators. I will have two switches to turn the sidings on/off.

I have few of questions before I start laying down the track and wiring:

    1. Are three feeders (one for the loop and one for each siding) enough or should I have two feeders for the loop?

    2. The base is 1/2" plywood that's going to be covered with Woodland Scenic's grass mat. What glue should I use to secure the grass mat to the plywood?

    3. What glue should I use to secure the Unitrack to the grass mat? I am not going to ballast the track and I would like to be able to remove the track from the mat in case I need to do so in the future.

    Thanks.

This looks almost exactly like my layout. ;)

    1. One feeder will be enough. One powers mine and i have a smidge more track.

We have a couple of these, being employed as designed, storing clothing. So, I am really curious about what you are doing. Photos, please?

    Thanks for replies.

Is Liquid Nails for Projects going to allow me to remove the track from the mat if needed?

BoxcabE50: I live in an apartment so a permanent layout is never going to happen. I just need something to play with together with my two kids. Under bed storage box was recommended to me and it looks like a good solution. The base is going to be glued to the lid and the bottom (actual box) is going to cover the layout when not in use. The whole thing is going to slide under the bed for storage. I will post pictures once I actually have something. For now, I just purchased the box, cut the plywood to size and ordered Unitrack.

Well im sure there will be extensive damage to the mat if you try to remove the track if any glue is used.

Maybe just lay the track on top and not secure it? Ittl all lock together and will stay in one place while trains are running.

    Thanks again for replying.

I have to secure the track somehow as I do not think my kids are going to be gentle enough not to push the track around when playing.

I am not concerned about the mat when disassembling the layout. I just want to have an option to reuse the track. Plywood and grass mat weren't that expensive vs the cost of Unitrack.

Unitrack has molded in posts on the underside. Drill out the holes and use 1/2" or 3/4" nails (depending on the thickness of the grass mat) to tack it down. The key is not to nail it down too hard. Leave a little gap between the nail head and track. This way if you later wish to remove the track, you can use needle nose pliers to pull out the nails. I use this method and it works great!

Silicon Caulking can also work. Not sure how well it would stick to the grass mat though.
