Sorry and I do know this is an old thread, but today I think I have had enough. I’m so tired of being teased with HO sales in my email.
I don’t know why I get excited each time I get a sale ad because each time is a big let down when there is nothing worthwhile in “N”. I guess I should put a stop to all the emails.

    Another N Scale Deserter?

Johnny and of course everyone tuned in,

You aren't the only one and as I get older my diabetic vision starts to take it's toll. Anyway, I'm pretty much at the end of my ability to financially support my hobby. I'm good and will stick with what I have. I bought a optimizer and kept my dad's heavy weight bifocals, just in case. lol

Snowing in Big Bear Valley as I write. We've already had one power outage. Many of the hardwood trees around me haven't lost their leaves YET, the snow is a heavy wet blanket causing limbs to break off. Hoping the big tree right by the train shed stays put. It can throw branches at the shed all night long but I don't want it deciding, it's had enough and lay it's self over on the shed. Sigh!

Looking into a catalytic convertor to keep the place warm when the power goes off. More fun ahead.

In keeping with the theme about enticing HO pictures. Yes, they are! What pissess me off is, this equipment is what I would have liked to of seen as a kid... over 50 years ago. Now, now, in 2013 they are finally coming out with the good stuff. In passing: This $#!+ is coming out at a price no kid could ever afford. This hobby is once again heading toward (before the days of Atlas, Athearn and ConCor) to being exclusive, as in only for the rich and famous. Hurrumph!

Looking at this from a different perspective. You pay for what you get and the quality is unlike anything we've ever seen before. A plus for the model railroad producers.... TRUE!

The fun and risk of reading threads from the beginning... I was almost going to type this response again...

I do have to tend toward agreement with Rick on the 'rich person's hobby' comment. It's out there, but you'll pay for it. Regardless of how it's pictured. I generally don't buy based on photos anyway, so while the practice is annoying it's not a show-stopper for me.

Yep, working a min. wage job makes stuff look expensive. That's why I usually buy used stuff unless it's something I absolutely have to have.

I was unprepared for the snow. I went into the mountains wearing a hooded sweatshirt and slip-on shoes. Not only did my feet get soaked but I got hit in the head with a large icicle leaving a pretty good bump. I took a photo of it, but can’t get it off my cell phone. From what I saw today with icicles falling off the trees everywhere, I think I’d be more afraid of one of those going through the shed roof. I ended up putting on a hard hat, but they still hurt getting hit in the back and arms.
Anyway I really need to stop buying stuff. Like you I can barely see anything anyway, but some of the photos of the HO stuff sure is inviting.

I'm still working, but not for long. Soon I will not have any choice but to retire and then I will not be able to buy anything, so I've telling myself that I need to stock up so I'll have something to do in retirement.

yeah that's not a bad idea, though I'm not sure if I'll get to retire. it'd be nice to work on kit's and trains all day. WHy can't model railroading be a career?

I've been around the block several times in both HO and N, and read several monthly magazines. I no longer get irritated when I see HO trains advertising future N scale products. I figure an ad with a picture is nicer than one without. I also know from handling just about every make and model over the years, of the limitations and constrictions of our scale, so I do not get disappointed when the N scale actual product does not match the HO picture.

However, when the benchmark Atlas RS3 came out, the ad pictured an undecorated RS3 with rapido couplers and that important loco and ones following were actual depictions. But often the loco is developed overseas, and magazine quality photo originals just may not be available without delaying construction of the final product. I only assume it but to no know this for a fact.

Another sterling example was way back when Model Die Casting introduced their Consolidation. Not only did we get photos of the actual N scale product, but roughly finished "in progress' models along the way. Who can forget the photos with makeshift valve gear? NOw that was a chance as I am pretty sure more than one of us felt some trepidation as to if the finished product would be equipped with such crude side gear, and it was not, but at least I felt to be part of the process by being regularly informed.

As for me, it is a wash, and a non issue. But I am waiting for that Precision Masters M1a any day now. lol.
