I use small cardboard boxes that are 3/4" x 5" x 3.5" called "Bracelet Boxes". Some people use the N Scale train boxes that have foam liner in them, about 1"x 12" x 18". Some guys use tackle boxes, and some use those clear plastic small parts boxes that are about 1.25" x 6" x 12". At least that is what guys in our club are using.
If you go to the following thread and scroll down the first page, it starts discussing storage cases. If you follow my posts to the second page, there are photos (low quality) of my storage/transport system for shows. http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?103741-Stuff-for-Z they work well for me. I use two column of Systainers on dolly. about 3 feet tall of cases. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,43326&p=64664 With mini cases that included the 5 compartment trays (each compartment hold 2 MTL boxes cars ) 5 minis in a Systainer #3 = this hold 50x cars or loco's in their original MTL acrylic box. And the Original Systainer #4 to hold Marklin or AZL cars that come in different sizes, all in the red Storage cases. Yes, they are expensives, but I ask them for birthdays or Xmas. Now there is the new T-Loc system that is better for unclipping quickly each cases. Ben

Since I have moved a lot every few years I swear by Travel-N-Trains cases. I have three, two for my N scale items (the bottom photo shows some of my N scale hoppers) and one for my Z scale items (I may have to buy a second one for my Z stuff). They are extremely sturdy and well built, they can take a punishment and totally protect your items. Sadly they are not produced any more so you have to hunt them down on the web or on ebay but they are well worth it! John
