Years ago a buddy of mine sent me this image of a GP38-2 in an unusual paint scheme for the SP. What was the story behind it? Experimental? I can't find the original email to see if there was an explanation.

Don't know a thing, but I are like it.
would be neat to see a model of it.

That appears to me to be a paint scheme used by a leasing company (most likely an old Helm Leasing locomotive) from which the unit was purchased (or leased) by the SP.

Do a Google search for SP 4873. Check out the photos and some postings.

Southern Pacific did lease 28 ex CSXT GP38-2's from Helm Leasing. They were originally numbered in the 151 to 170 series. Some were painted in Southern Pacific paint, but under lease. they were renumbered 4846 to 4873.

OK, thanks for the information. I found a USB plug in drive that I could use to look at some old floppy disks from a computer that is long gone. My Mac has no place to read those old things. :)
I was looking for JPG images and found that one. Just got me curious.
