I don't know a lot about them, did they run with pantographs and third rail a bit with big Niles interurbans ?

Like you, I don't know a lot about the SCDA&P. What photos I can recall, from books, showed both poles and pantographs. I cannot recall ever reading or hearing about using a third rail, but that would be possible.

References on the 'Net are sparse at best. Everyone seems to be fixated on predecessor Spokane & Inland Empire RY.

or the LARY, the LARY carried more passengers than the PE, but was a 3'6" gauge, which is about Z scale track in N (Nn3 modelers live with this)

Heya, so this thread has convinced me to start planning on modelling some of the now-defunct Grand River Railway and thanks to that website I have a lot of information I'm going to have to track down and a lot of scratch building ahead of me, which is kind of what I wanted to get into anyway since I don't have room for big layout building at the moment and would like something a bit different to get myself back into modelling. Anyway, thanks for posting this thread!

If you do not have a lot of room available, perhaps consider a modular concept?

I've thought about it, I have a long narrow space so something along a shelf layout might work for me. I have to get some back issues ordered and think about what I want to model before I get too into layout ideas.

I grew up just north of Kansas City. That bridge was in our back yard, on property that was in the family for a long time. I sold it a few years ago. Thankfully it is now part of a park. I played on and around it my whole childhood. My mom and grandma rode the train often. I plan to model the bridge and a car someday.

(I don't know the fellow in that pic)

"Like you, I don't know a lot about the SCDA&P. What photos I can recall, from books, showed both poles and pantographs."

Some "SC&P" (as the line was referred to in GN diagrams and several publications) cars show pantographs and poles (baggage - mail cars 1 - 3, baggage cars 10 and 11, and baggage - coaches 80 and 82 - 84) while coach GN 2400 (ex-SC&P 74) shows only pantographs and baggage - mail cars 20 and 21, baggage cars 25 and 26, baggage - coaches 40 - 47 and coaches 60 and 61 only have poles. Like the Northwestern Pacific and the South Shore (others???) this line used trailers fairly extensively.

The cars equipped with pantographs were for 6600 vAC. running while poles were for 600 vDC. running with some cars equipped for both (GN 2400 was equipped to run either 6600 or 11,000 vAC). I know nothing more about this line but there is no mention of 3rd rail being used on any of the diagrams. All date from November 1930.

Don Ross has a few photos of cars and motors on his website for SC&P, some lettered for the GN and sublettered appropriately.

Great looking paint job! I hope the striping is decals, otherwise I'd fear for your sanity!

Thanks everyone ! The real work was in fact the decal sheet made by our own Ted Freeman ! The Salmon colors are entirely decal. The secret to using large decals is a glass smooth finish . I primed and sanded these prints and painted them with One Shot sign painters paint.

Today I want to finish the lettering on the 801-802 and get a picture of the twins.

Just beautiful, Randy! One of the better finishing jobs I've seen. Gee, I've got a couple feet of wall available - maybe a CNS&M diorama...

Makes me want to go to IRM just to be near it again...last fall during Museum Showcase Weekend, they had the 'Liner open for inspection - they are doing their usual impeccable restoration. In a couple years, this beauty will be fully restored AND operational - including Electroburgers!

    Hi Jim,

    Thanks !!

I am thinking about a diorama now, I am thinking perhaps a section of South 5th street in Milwaukee. I have a bunch of houses and some corner taverns. I was also thinking of South 6th and Oklahoma where the CNS&M crossed over the Milwaukee Road. I could pose a 1948 Hiawatha as well as some CNS&M trains.

I have another surprise for a little later.

IRM is a wonderful place BTW !!!

It's been a while since anyone mentioned this paint. I'd forgotten all about it.

Great models! I still have some faint a distant memories of riding on a number of traction cars during the early years in the east before relocating to Montana for a spell. There were some fascinating operations back when and if we had not been in such a rush to embrace the danged automobile that now clogs our roads we would have had the rapid transit systems in place now and a lot cleaner air.
