    Howdy,

I'm lookin at the Bachmann 2-10-2 as a starting point to build an SP F-1 class. I know, the wheel diameter is to small. I think I can live with that. What I would like to know is:

What is the dimension from the center of that huge front coupler to the back of the cab-?
What is the wheel base- from the pilot wheel to the trailing wheel-?

I have a CC 2-10-2-- it's just way to long for my needs. If The Bachmann is anywhere near 154 scale feet (From the front coupler to the rear of its cab- I think I can make it work).

    Thanks,
    Wolf

You sure about that 154 scale feet? My USRA drawing for the light 2-10-2 has it at 52' 9 7/8" from front of coupler to rear of cab
    with the F-1/F-2 being 53' 4 1/2" front of coupler /rear of cab . Height for the USRA 15', SP's 15' 8". I have the Bachman but I don't have the scale.

Coupler pocket to back of cab ---51'6"
Center of pilot wheel to center of trailing wheel --- 41'
    Centerline #1 driver to Centerline #2 driver --- 21'

Dimensions are eyeballed using a scale rule.

Could not find my book with the USRA plans right off but found an ATSF prototype based on a heavy 2-10-2 and the dimensions were close.

    Hope this helps!

I am just tryin to get close. Like I said- the CC is to long (by about 7'). Dang- what a major typo!!! LOL!!! Holy crap-- I meant 54'. (just re-read my post.)

    Thanks- for waking me up!!!

    Hey Glenn,

Thank you!! This info is most helpful!!

I think I can make a reasonable representation of an SP F-1, using the Bachmann 2-10-2. The drivers are about 12" in diameter to small- but what the heck.

    Best regards,
    Wolf

    Hi Wolfgang,
have you considered stretching a Kato Mike? In my opinion, you're going to put a lot of work into a model that will not look quite right in the end. The Bachmann 2-10-2 driver size represents a 1st generation engine with 57/58" drivers; the more modern 2-10-2's like the SP decks typically had 63" drivers.
I had a similar dilemma with the Santa Fe 3800 class: the Bachmann is too small, and the Concor too big. Stretching the Kato Mike yields a proper size mechanism. Others have pioneered this idea, most recently Tony Hines and Jason Smith (Superturbine) and Jason may be willing to help with parts. Pics of my mech below.
    Have fun!

    Howdy Otto,

Funny you asked. I've been in communication with Jason. I am now going this route. He is going to work up an F-1 casting. And- yes- I will stretch a Kato mech (with Jason's expert guidance). As the rest of my SP steam fleet is either brass or Kato (GS4's), I know- I wouldn't be happy with a stand in. Although, I was gonna try.

    Thanks for your valuable input!!
