Hi everyone. I recently picked up a Con Cor 4-6-4 made in Japan with what i'm assuming is the Kato drive. I have a half dozen 4-6-4's of both the Rail Baron and prior varieties with tender pick-up and all run extremely well. The most recent purchase now runs well after a little cleanup and some tweaking. However there is one thing that is different on this one than any other that I have. This one has traction tires on both the first and last drivers. Has anyone else seen this? All the others only have TT on the last set of drivers. Maybe the front drivers were swapped out? I'm interested to see if this was factory or an aftermarket addition.

Hmm, all mine only have them on one driver set.

Yep! The last one I picked up has the same setup. I thought maybe someone had added it on. Now I wonder......

Interesting. I guess maybe it is a factory set-up.

Con-Cor had three releases for the J3a. Mark, Spookshow reviewed all three.

Thanks. I've read Spookshow's reviews and realize that there were different versions. The version that I don't have is the first one without tender pickup. The question I have is with the second version. The one made in Japan. I have three of these. They differ from the Rail Baron in that they are made in Japan and not China and the the wires to the tender are not routed through the rear truck. Of the three that are virtually identical, the most recent purchase has two sets of TT's. If this is factory then there must be two variations of the second version.

The dual traction driver version is Kato factory made. I think they came out with it a little while after the tender power pickup version was introduced and then went back to the single traction tire version after a few years. Then the production was shifted to China and the single traction tire Rail Barron version was made there. The dual tire version will pull the paint off the walls.

    Have fun, Mark
