I just started an N scale layout. I purchased the Kato M1 and V5 starter sets. It appears that I have to purchase another power pack to run a train on the inner loop. Is that true or is there another option? Kato doesn't give much info in their brochure/instruction sheet.

Welcome aboard. I'd say you selected some good starter sets. If you want to run two trains independently, you will need another power pack; the only way one would work alone is if you wanted both trains operating exactly the same.

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

As already noted, you'll need a second power supply.

Hi Mike, Welcome to the Train Board, glad to have you on board, especially in N-Scale. I agree, to run two trains independently with DC, you need two power supplies, although MRC makes dual control power supplies in a single box. The MRC Tech 6 line is their latest. However, you might be able to find an MRC Tech 4 280, or even a Tech 2 2800 as leftover local hobby shop (LHS) shelf stock or used at much lower prices. I had a Tech 2 2800 for over 20 years, and now have had a Tech 4 280 for about 5 years...great units.

Thanks for all the welcome posts. Another question: since I have Kato Unitrack do I have to use their power packs? I'm sure I could get others for less especially on eBay. How would I hook them up though?

You can use any DC power pack you wish to buy. They hook to track the very same way. Two wires, one to each of the two variable DC output posts or screws on the power pack.

I'm using an MRC Tech II with Unitrack. I didn't order all the stuff I needed, so for now I stripped the Kato power pack connector from the wires, but they do make an adapter to allow conecting to any conventional power pack.

No, any good DC power pack will work. I've used MRC for nearly 60 years, but I'm sure others are just as good. I hope someone familiar with DCC hops in here because I've never used it.
