Hi Rock N scale fans, planning on doing a 2700 - 2719 commuter car in 3D got a pretty basic plan from Model Railroader and a few images from the net that I can just about work to, any additional information appreciated.
There was a post to the RITS list at Yahoo! groups that mentioned one of these cars (RI 2702) has been found and is for sale through Ozark Mountain Railcar. All were thought to have been scrapped but at least one is still with us. Hope things go well with getting your drawings right, which is critical to getting a good print. While I have little interest in them myself there are a number of modelers out there who would find these to be of use. While it has faded from view (page 1) here at Trainboard there recently was a really great thread on the Rock Island. You might be able to find it and mention this on the thread for future reference.
Volume 8 of the Pullman Standard Library Passenger car book has some dimensions. If there's something you need I can see if it has it. Jason
There's a few things you have to check when making these cars, one is the difference in the underbody detail, as the earlier delivered cars have a different arrangement of equipment than the later cars in the series. I think the cut-off is at 10 cars, so for example I've built one each: 2709 and 2716 using sides from Union Station Products car sides, and both have a very different arrangement of underbody equipment. Also something to note is the exhaust stacks at one of the ends, there are also two different types that I have seen, one is a straight pipe with a curved top while the other is a combination of two angular bends. Don't forget the square shaped roof vents as well as the differently cut side skirts, there's one with angled cuts between the doors and the other has a more rectangular cut, both of which are later modifications in the lifespan of these cars. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions. P.S: Just curious, would you perhaps also be interested in designing a model for the Rock Island open air "Capone" commuter cars? I would love to have a fleet of those ubiquitous cars that lasted until the very end.
Some of the the details depend when you model too. From the Pullman book: 2700-2703 were the only ones with toilets as delivered, 2704-2705, 2710-2713 and 2717 had them installed. 2700-2711 had air conditioning, 2712, 2713 and 2717 had it added at the same time as the toilets. As far as other details, the book separates the cars into two batches, 2700-2711 and 2712-2719. The cars without A/C had a forced air system that had more roof vents (or so it appears). Not saying you need to cover all of this, just some info to pass along. Jason
Hi Guys First the link to Ozark - http://www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com/detail.asp?id=1369&n=Rock-Island-Commuter-Coach-2702--NEW Thanks for the advice, answers a lot of the questions I had, it may be that I do 2 options ac and non ac what do you think? Pic of the basic car version so far Plan is to have a piece of 1mm styrene sheet to mount the truck on and fix this into the body, [there will be some ribs so the styrene can sit up against]. My knowledge of RI is pretty basic as this project is for a friend. Wuttermelon - had a quick google of Al Capone cars and they look relatively easily do able, can you furnish me with plans, details etc.
Hi Alexander I have the Pullman Standard Library book too and I am also in the UK, albeit at the other end, and could photocopy and send you all the info, there's lots of it! Bye the way the 'Capone' cars you refer to in another thread were I believe also called 'Jesse James' cars. Some swore there were holes in them from bullets and arrows. I have always assumed 'Capone' refers to their use in Chicago from that era.... Gerry
