This is the first part of my benchwork. This portion is 11' long and is 30" wide for 8'. The last 3' are 4' wide. I found some 1/4" foam at Dollar General and I think I will use it for the lower elevations. I will transition to 1" and 2" Styrofoam for the higher elevations. I am certainly open to any suggestions/ideas. I have a couple of items in mind for this portion of my layout. I am still looking and making some drawings of what I want to do. I have a difficult time getting it from my "minds eye" to actually building it.

Today I learned a valuable lesson. I was disappointed to say the least about the benchwork that I did yesterday. I did a lot of things that were okay but, there were several that weren't. I took it all apart this morning and have worked all afternoon putting it back together. It is a long story but, at the end of the day, you have to try and do things right from the beginning. I got in a hurry and things weren't square where they should've been square and they weren't level either.

I feel much better about layout.

Now my question is this.....should I lay just foam on the benchwork or lay the 7/16 particle board first and the foam on top of the particle board? Second question....regardless of which choose in the first question, how do I fasten the foam to the benchwork?

As the old saying goes "practice makes perfect!" Been there, learned that lesson.

I think the particle board would be a personal preference question, although I have heard stories of that material warping over time (depending on the room conditions and atmosphere). As for attaching the foam, a latex adhesive (like Liquid Nails for Projects, as I believe one brand is called) would be the best bet. Just check carefully that it has no petroleum base ot it as this will attack the foam with very undesirable results.

Dad, I laid two layers of 3/4" foam on top of 1"x2" clear pine. The boards are spaced no more than 16" on center, many less. I've had no problems in seven years.
