Maybe someone has an answer for this: http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/showthread.php?163108-On-the-radio&p=1019715#post1019715
There was a lot of jockeying for control from one railroad to another back then. It was a tough time after WWII for all of them. I know I have read of a lot of these things, but darned if I can remember the details.
I think C&O railfan is correct. There was much infighting going on at that time for control and merging of the two railroads. LEW
Robert R Young who controlled the C&O attempted to gain a seat on the on the board of directors of the NYC after he bought 400 thousand shares of the NYC, which he thought was under valued. He tried and failed to effect a merger with the NYC-C&O and Virginian railroads, which he thought would be a good match-up. He later headed the NYC but passed away before he could effect any dramatic changes. The yard in Elkhart was named in his honor.
Glad i wa able to get teh answer to this one. Makes listening to that radio show spot all come together.
