    Hi all!
I was hoping you could help me out. I am trying to figure out some paint colors. I am looking for some acrylic paint to match the ATSF blue and yellow warbonnet scheme.

So far the closest I have found is Model Master Deep Sea Blue and True-Line CP Action Yellow. I'll take any help I can get.
    Thanks,
    Karl

I shifted from the old Floquil paints to the newer high tech acrylic paints. But then Testors got out of the model RR paint market and left me stranded. I have now gone back to solvent based paints put out by True-Color and have been very pleased. The colors are bang on as far as I am concerned and I really like the way it goes on. One problem I always had with the acrylics was masking. The paint would just not break smooth along a masked line and give a clean edge between colors. The stretchy coat of paint would tear leaving a ragged edge when I pulled up the masking tape. I have found the True-Color TCP-20 Santa Fe Blue and TCP-21 Santa Fe Yellow my choice for that paint scheme.

    Karl,

I've used Scalecoat II before and it's been pretty good. I've also used ModeFlex in the past, but after getting a number of "hockey pucks" inside new bottles, have moved on to other brands.

Weaver's pafe for Scalecoat II: http://www.weavermodels.com/page11.html (not sure what their deal is with no shipping to Texas though. Very strange...)

I fully intend to buy some Tru-Color paints when I get back to the states to see how that works out. Can't get it air shipped.

Russell, try removing the masking tape as soon as possible after shooting the paint. If you let it set-up to long, the paint does exactly what you described. I usually pull any masking off within 5 minutes of finishing the second color.

    Cheers,
    Brian

Prefer the Tru Color paints myself. But in all reality no one makes the "perfect" paint. There's too many variables like viewing conditions, variations w/in any one brand's colors, etc, etc, etc. But to my eyes the Tru Color Santa Fe blue & yellow look real good! And if you weather your loco like in your image who's going to really know if it's the "right" color or not. LOL

I'll jump in here and say that True Color is good stuff. However, I also really like Scalecoat II because of its color correctness for my road (UP) and because its thinner is simple enamel paint thinner.

True Color works really well in my airbrush, but the thinner is a custom blend of solvents that you can't buy off the shelf, so thinner costs for clean-up and thinning for airbrush work gets a little expensive.

I quit using Floquil years ago, and only used Polly Scale for weathering and painting people. I've still got hundreds of bottles of it, so I won't be running out any time soon.

    Cheerio!
