If I buy a new Broadway Limited AC6000 (I want the smoker) to consist with my new SD40-2 how will they look together? Paint etc… Anyone modeling this combo???
I have a BLI AC6000(CSX) and run it with SD40-2s all the time. I also have run it with SD50/SD60s also. I live near a CSX line and have seen this combo in real life. They will look right at home together! JMS
I have run it with Athearn and Bachmann locos. Seemed to run well together. I also have run it with my Kato SD80AC... runs great. I just took a couple pics for you... it was quick, so, the pics are not the best! JMS PS- the SD40-2 is a Bachmann.
Different paint is not always bad... paint fades over time, gets dirty(ah, weathering... the great equalizer!), older models getting new paint... so, if the paint is off a little, I wouldn't think it is a big deal. Hell, that Bachmann in the pic had the wrong color pilots, and the handrail ends were white. I painted the pilots black, and the handrail ends yellow. I even used some white on the battery box cover to simulate that the cover came from a much, much older unit. JMS
I agree just outstanding weathering. Great modeling skills and layout, I always enjoy seeing your work John. As a side note; Most carriers will put just enough power Horsepower Per Ton (HTP) on a train, to fit the service schedule of the train symbol and territory it is routed. And they dont want a single extra pony on it to do the job, these locos are at their peak efficiency in run8. Generally speaking if a customer wants it quicker or on a more regular schedule they will pay a horse power premium for that service. Not odd at all to see these kinds of power combinations, I enjoy the contrast.
Thanks guys! The weathering is a little bit of airbrush, spray cans, hand paint and chalks(rust, brown, black and grey). I always say... "There is no wrong way to weather rail equipment!" JMS
Back to the matching paint thing... Look at the following pic. Most people would say that the colors I used are too bright and too light for CSX YN2 paint. And, I would have to agree. JMS
But, when you see how I finished the model... it becomes clear that I NEEDED to start off with those too bright/too light colors. BTW- I used my normal weathering techniques on this loco... and also, one other... a crumbled up paper towel! And, the big CSX on the sides is a home made decal. I scanned the original... then in an edit program, I lighten the color to match the paint on the model. JMS
Hi John, it looks pretty beat up! Just a thought, maybe a bit more soot/rust on top and darken up the grills? That would be my taste. I really like the paint fade, that looks fantastic! But then again, I'm known to make them look really used and abused!!!!! LOL
Thanks Dale. When weathering, the last step for me is chalks. I have yet to get to this step... but, I have a feeling that I will be using a lot of black! LOL! JMS
Great looking stuff John, always something to learn for me here. John and Dale, what kind of dull coat are you guys using? with Floquil and now Scalecoat gone or choices are getting smaller.
