How does one set the rail-joint clank sound?

I model in n-scale and like the rail-joint clank sound that is activated with F16 in the Atlas ALCO S-2 locomotives with dcc and sound and also in another locomotive in which I hired installation of ESU LokSound dcc with sound.

I do not understand if this sound can be activated in the Bachmann n-scale K4s and 2-8-4 locomotives.

Obviously, I do not understand whether the sound must be installed in the decoder to be available to activate
or if it is standard in the dcc sound decoders and activated by different "function value" depending on the decoder maker. Thanks in advance.

    Roger,
The rail clank is not available on the Bachmann sound value (soundtraxx) decoders. I don't think it is available on their new Econami either.
The Atlas S-2 has a ESU LokSound decoder.
ESU LokSound decoders are programmable so you can select a sound file that includes the rail clank. Soundtraxx decoders are not programmable except by them.

Thank you, I think my question reflects the limitation of understanding the sound features. This will definitely influence which decoders I hire installed in the 3 steam locomotives I am hoping to have upgraded with dcc and sound.

Don't you mean the coupler clank? I've never seen 'rail clank' on any of my Tsunamis.

Nope. He means rail clank. It's programmed into ESU micro select decoders. Not sure how to adjust rate yet though. It's pretty neat..

Yes, I do mean the rail-joint clank which is a very nice feature of the ESU LokSound decoders with sound. It is so typical of what one hears as they waiting at a grade crossing as a train passes. I have a few locomotives with that sound; it is turned on with F13 or F16 as I recall.

No I mean the rail-joint clank sound; it is not in the features of Soundtraxx that I have in any locomotives.

It looks like the rail-joint clank volume is the only adjustable part in the Loksound Select version. However, the v.4 decoder looks like it is adjustable. Haven't got a v.4 so haven't tried it yet.

The locomotives I currently own with the rail-joint clank sound are two Atlas Alco S-2s and a Kato SD-70Ace in which I had ESU LokSound dcc decoder with sound custom installed. It is one of my most favorite sound features in these locomotives. It certainly evokes the feeling of waiting at a grade crossing as a train passes by. As to the actual volume, I have not investigated whether it can be adjusted. It is one of the functions I turn on immediately when I run these locomotives. I like it enough to consider having two locomotives that already have dcc installed converted to the ESU LokSound dcc decoder with sound to get that feature.

The sound is turned on in the Atlas ALCO S-2s by F16. I do not know why or how it is assigned to different Function numbers.
