Excellent loads John, and great weathering on those cars to. Looking at your aluminum bales, I was thinking about using some box tubing, with key stock that will slide inside the box tubing to make uniformed bales. Anyone know how big a prototype aluminum bale is?
I wonder if there is actually any standard size. I have seen many salvage and scrap yards with home brewed equipment for crushing or baling.
I made a load of aluminum bales years ago, I use a 3/8"x3/8" square and the were about 1/4" thick. I'll have to gig the car out and get a picture of it. Forgot all about it till I just read this.
Not at the moment. I am thinking of installing some scale chains with hooks so I can remove the load when I want to. JMS
Thank you! I just used my fingers. Using my index fingers and thumbs(both hands) I just crushed them down into various sizes then painted. JMS
caught another load in Quanah today and got a few photos. This is from the Rocky Mountain Pipe Company. Used a boxcar weight, painted the top flat Black, put a few timbers down, loaded a few layers of Brass tubes cut to length, and painted Blue, wrapped with drafting tape, used a tiny spot of red to simulate the band clamps. Made this one unloadable. Thanks for stopping by
Pretty darn cool Tom! Between projects at work and projects with kids I'm falling behind you guys!!!! This is a very good thread!
Come on Tom... I haven't finished all my other load projects... and you keep giving me more to do! LOL! Looks awesome! Hope you do not mind me stealing this idea? JMS
This thread is driving me mad! All these superb loads and I have not made time to do one of them yet! Other stuff keeps diverting me.
Saw this load in the RIP's today.. You never know what you might see there. Removed the tires and wheels from the machine, (to keep from having an excessive dimension load) drilled the wheels out and used N scale wheels for the hubs on the machine. Sometimes you need to dis-assemble the model to make a more plausible load. Drafting tape and chain was used to secure the lading. Used an MDC car, with Reboxx wheels, and custom car details.
Tom, Your loads never cease to amaze me. That is great. You could sell those! Thanks, for showing it.
FYI, The current MRH has an article on AAR regs for securing open loads: http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/magazine/mrh-2015-10-oct/open-top-loads
Here are three cars I just got done with recently, one bulk head flat and two re-purposed pulp wood cars. David
