A ZTrain flies through Barstow and past the Station at track speed.

Not sure how fast it was going, but BNSF clearly doesn't slow these down for anything as pedestrian as a major yard.

An Alco MRS-3 sits outside the engine shops at Rusk, Texas. It was built for the US Army in 1953 and came to the TSR in 1982 from the U. S. Army Ammunition Plant, McAlester, Oklahoma.

I didn't realize ALCO built anything with that body style. It looks similar to FM's H-16, but with a longer short hood.

Taken a few weeks ago, NS Train 155 makes its way south through Ridgeway, SC. Looks like the 9726 has suffered an exhaust fire.

They were kind of rare. It was a follow up to the MRS-1 that was ordered by the US military to their specifications. The bid was actually made by GE who then contracted Alco to make them. The guts are basically an RS-3 but the sheet metal is unique.

Surprising that GE would take the lead on that bid. I thought GE supplied only the electrical equipment during its relationship with ALCO. Or did ALCO also use GE's diesel prime movers?

Alco always produced their own prime movers. They just used GE to supply the electrical equipment. I can find an article on the MRS-1 but nothing specific on the MRS-3. I suppose the different body was the result of the specified narrower loading gauge. That kind of pushed some of the equipment to the upper part of the car body where extra space was gained buy raising the hoods to the level of the cab. The cabs are narrower too. The article mentions that GM produced thirteen locomotives to the same specifications. I don't recall ever seeing what they looked like.

Is there anything remaining of Cedar Lake Yard? Or just essentially one track passing through some memories?

Just the one track branching off from the BNSF Wayzata Sub. No sign at all of the shops or turntable. There was a single standing telegraph pole that was cut down a couple years ago. I've scavenged a few of the insulator holders.

It's sad to know how such a significant facility is virtually unknown to many people today. Even to those who might know, almost invisible to their eyes.
