These are new products from Woodland Scenics. I thought of Candy as soon as I saw the photo's. Obviously there is a lot of attention to detail and overall it's a very nice scene. http://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/Item/JP0001/page/1 Randy
Hmmm. Sometime I ought to build a highly detailed and nostalgic sweet shop with a big "CANDY" sign on the front, in honor of Candy's modeling. I once did an old-west style saloon as a Christmas surprise for a modeler whose wife was named "Lilly", saloon called "The Gilded Lilly." My mother-in-law made and dressed dolls, and I detailed a DPM kit for her whatnot stand as "Dolly's Dollies." And to recognize a modeler/Disk Jockey whose Rock station air name was "J J Stone", I placed the J J Stone Gravel Works on my layout.
Hmmm... interesting but.... I approve of the new RTR buildings with the interior lighting... The street lamps and such are also pretty interesting... though as any other scenery items which are somewhat flimsy... would be destroyed by my Godzilla hands. The vehicles with the lighting effects are nice too... hate to think what they will be selling for. If the none lighted vehicles are MSRP of $15 to $25... these will probably start at $25 and upward. The weird thing about lighting is that you can't appreciate it in a well lit room... and most of us run trains on a well lighted layout room. I guess we will see a lot more night scenes and night time operating sessions.
I think the judicious use of two or three lit vehicles are probably enough for full effect. I know I have to keep reminding myself that not every patch of pavement needs a vehicle on it.
The W/S lighting system intrigues me. I have not purchased any of the many options simply because my home layout has been packed since the Spring of 2014 in preparation for a move to another house which has not occurred. From all I have seen so far, I could consider purchase of some of the interior lighting items and the wooden pole street lights for the future layout which will continue to be set in the 1940s. I am not criticizing the products. They are great additions to the hobby. However, I, too, question what judicious use of these lighting products would be for me. My thoughts tend toward a similar question with "details." The W/S built up structures come to mind, even the partially assembled versions. I removed some of the details from the kits because they just did not "fit" with the rest of my layout.
Needs a basic 'you add the car body' module, as you'll never make everyone happy with the handful of vehicles you can produce. It's hard enough to find vehicles at all. As a 70's modeler I'm not paying for a '40's vehicle. I did a conversion of a mini-metals police car to alternating flashing headlights and a gumball flasher, it's turned out to be a real favorite on the layout. I had Jim Hinds at Richmond Controls design it. I love night operations and have spent a lot of time getting things together. It's like having an entirely different layout and it 'feels' completely different to the emotions as well. Some of my favorite memories are on trains, station platforms, etc. at night.
Well said. When I was young, I had Lionel trains and just loved running them in a darkened basement. The train and layout lighting was magical and I still miss it.
I, too, am a fan of "night/dusk/dawn" operations, especially passenger. Here are some of my favorites (sorry I got carried away a bit here lol). John
The pictures are inspiring and speak volumes in support of the effect of lighting on a layout. I model the 1940s, thus would like more nicely done vehicles that would have been around then, even ones from much earlier as I recall from my childhood there were still several Model As around in central, rural Illinois.
I worked my lighting in so that day and night could be achieved. Here are two photos showing the difference (I custom made the street lamps) And, if I go all dark (primarily by going to high f-stop and short exposure)
Thanks for the compliments. It's amazing what a few (ok, ok, a few hundred) light bulbs can do! All but exactly one of the layout bulbs are incandescent and running at 9 volts instead of 12, for longevity as well as the warm "glow" of the mid- '60s we remember. So, over the last 12 years I've had to replace only 2 or 3 bulbs. The layout room being windowless helps, too. Passenger car lightings are LED's. John Some more if you don't mind....
I meant for Candy Streeter but out of habit I posted here in the N scale section. Candy is well known for well thought out scenes and outstanding attention to detail. I thought she would be interested in these lighted accessories to enhance her already outstanding model building. Randy
Must be the most uninformed person on this forum because I don't know who Candy Streeter is. Sent from my SM-G530T using Tapatalk
Not meeting to beat my own chest or blow my own horn but I get to see John A's, layout on operations night almost every Wednesday night. Awesome in person and the pictures speak volumes. Nice and that goes for everyone Else's pictures submitted. Nice!
