Anybody know the current status or future plans for the Texas State Railroad #500 (Santa Fe 1316)? Seems all the other steam locomotives have been painted back into their original schemes (thank goodness) and are faring very well, but I can't find any info about the 500 being in working order or what its disposition is. All photos of it in operation seem to be several years old. Hopefully it will receive the same treatment as the other locomotives if it is still there.

I've got a soft spot in my heart for 1316, as my sig proves. Unfortunately, I'm in the same boat. I've also heard no news, and don't consider that good news.

Would love to see it get a going-over like the Abilene & Smoky Valley's Santa Fe 4-6-2. I'm sure those engines were a sight to behold thundering into town with the Santa Fe's finest trains.

Me, too. Though I doubt the lighter engine needs that much attention, considering she hasn't been left sitting for sixty years the way her big sister had.

Which makes the thought of her sitting neglected that much sadder. That and the fact that I haven't seen the 3415 all steamed up--yet--but I have seen old 1316 tooling along through the Piney Woods.

She's sitting behind the shops in Rusk, looks to be in great shape. Next time I'm through I will try to ask.

Not bad for an engine missing her boiler, but I wish they'd grease her bare metal until they get her back together.

Thanks for the pic. Now we know...

No wonder her bits are rusting over.

Thank you for that. Governments commit far and away the most criminal acts, and generally for no reason but sheer arrogance. Why do we put up with them?

So the best-preserved TSR engines are the ones declared--for political reasons--unworthy of preservation. Reagan was right. The nine most frightening words in the English language really are, 'We're from the government and we're here to help.'

Good for Earl! I hope they treat him very well.
