So making mistakes are now more valuable than doing it right. If only this were true in real life...

So this guy wants $585 because the road number is missing on one side?! I could make some cars like that real quick and fund the rest of my empire. Wonder if it is worth $1,170 if they are missing on both sides?

But, as a runner, if I bought that car, I would want to add the road number for my op sessions, and then I would lose $575.

    LOL

When the mint screws up a coin, the value of that coin goes through the roof, because it's a rarity. I'm not convinced that translates to model railroads, though.

Incidents of this model railroader screwing up are depressingly common...

    Rare Bachmann set!

...may or may not be rare because the only one in existence was made up by the seller. Only $395! o_O

That "set" is just the doodlebug (without its usual trailer coach) plus a complete "set" of the Bachmann "65' shorty" passenger cars. Maybe not such a bad combination, except that it is hard to figure where the combine would make sense in a train with a doodlebug in front and an open-platform observation car on the end. But, WAY overpriced.

" Engine tested with lights. " - But did it test with motor?

Ebay rare listings. "...one of the classic blunders."

    Other "rare" sets: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Spectrum-BA...624829?hash=item1a1a411dfd:g:f~wAAOSwlV9WQ9GB

Rare - "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

There isn't a specific thread for this, yet, so I'll just post it here, but maybe there should also be a Shapeways Humour thread, too.

I just saw a listing for a 3D printed part of a 3200 Gallon EMD Fuel Tank for Kato SD40-2s to represent the smaller fuel tanks used by the Milwaukee Road. (y)

I'm really tempted by the benefits a bit more realism would bring, but what I'm scratching my head about is the price, because it seems to appear that a single item is $30.17CAD, which seems a lot for a small part for what it is. But what seems slightly odd is that, from the same seller, you can order a pack of 5 fuel tanks for a little more than double the price of a single one at $72.18CAD.

In addition, there is the fact that getting the part to fit, requires taking apart the SD40-2 frame and cutting away part of the underbody so that the shortened fuel tank will fit. That alone should mean a more realistic price, because of the aftermarket investment in time and potential tears that needs to be put in.

I was the person who requested the 5 pack of those fuel tanks. I'm going to install them on McCloud Railway SD38 locomotives.
3D printing cost is based on a lot of things. A lot can be done in the design of the printing to reduce costs so I think stacking the tanks together helps on that front. There is also designer profit to add, some designers do it for fun and pass the savings on to us.

Ha! If I were the sort of person who'd make a $1 million plus purchase on ebay (or, for that matter, the sort of person who could), I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want the "Free Shipping!" at that price point...:ROFLMAO:

Buy something off EckBay...quadruple the price and resell. It keeps the math simple ;):ROFLMAO:

Then I must salute you sir! By your efforts you have singly made greater realism possible for all Milwaukee Road modellers, as well. (y)

Well I can't take credit as someone else approached Cutting Edge Scale Models about MILW/SOO 3200 gal tanks. I showed interest in them for McCloud units and since it was going to be too expensive to order singles, I asked for a 5 pack and David made it cheaper!
