Sorry I'm having trouble loading photos. Apparently my file names are too long. Charlie is helping me with that so I'll start over as soon as possible.

Here are the photos of my N scale shelf layout. This is module 05 of 11 and is complete except for a small area that needs ballast. I'm currently working on modules 04, 06 and 07.

Module 05 features a plate girder bridge, two concrete buildings, a pair of King Mill buildings and a coal trestle. All were scratch built with the coal trestle being my first major scratch building project.

Nice work Joe! What brand of track are you using?

    Thank you guys!

The coal trestle is about 160 feet long and 15 feet to the top of the rails. I drew the bents on a thin piece of paper using a blueprint and photos then held the parts in place with straight pins until the glue set up. A piece of Atlas code 80 flex track with some of the ties removed topped off the project.

You can follow along with the layout progress on frisco.org and be sure to check out my photo albums in my profile page.

Beautiful modeling. You make N scale seem bigger.

That's a nice little module! I love the trestle and the heavily weathered car beside it.

Any chance of seeing the track plans of the modules and how they fit to one another to make the bigger layout?

Nimo, I'll post the layout drawings tomorrow when I go to the library. The drawing is on a laptop that isn't connected to the internet. I used Excel to make the drawings.

I would like to give you a idea about what my layout will look like.

Module 01 will have a turntable and roundhouse with locomotive service areas.

Module 02 features a food processing company and the south end of a small yard.

Module 03 features the Ft. Smith Depot and the north end of the yard.

Module 04 will have a grain elevator with eight silos or an ice house. They will be interchangeable to add variety to the layout.

Module 05 is complete with a coal trestle, a woolen mill and Norge Manufacturing.

Module 06 features a farm and oil company or stockyard. The oil company and stockyard are interchangeable so that I can add variety to the layout.

Module 07 features a small depot with a passing track.

Module 08 has a steel trestle along with a coal mine or lumber mill. They are interchangeable industries to add variety. It also has an entrance/exit to a staging yard.

Module 09 has a tunnel on the inside half of the module and the south end of the staging yard on the back.

Module 10 features a stream and the north end of the staging yard.

Module 11 has some company houses and a entrance/exist to the staging yard. This is where the track connects to the track on Module 01.

WOW! That is an incredible plan, Joe. And MS Excel? Bravo! I think that is possibly the best use of Excel I have ever seen!

That is solid planning, love the use of space and those long running tracks in module 5,6, 9 and 10. And the way you have even planned out the individual train is very clever. Leaving the layout aside, that plan itself is captivating - thanks for sharing.

Thank you Nimo and Joe, I used MS Excel 2007 Student and Teacher software to draw the layout. It's a lot of fun to work with. The new Student and Teacher software is not very useful for drawing, too many buttons to push just to draw one line.

The thing I like the most about the 2007 software is the ease it's to use. First I draw the mainline and then the other tracks. Afterwards I draw the water effects and elevation lines. Put as much time into the flow of water as you did when you drew the tracks. Go with the flow. Last draw the buildings and other features that you want to highlight.

When building the layout I like to use foam insulation to build up the elevation. To start out I use 3/4 inch Birch plywood and then glue a layer of 1/2 inch blue foam and 1 inch pink foam before I lay the cork roadbed down. I use caulking as glue. The blue foam is a kind of a warning track, to barrow a baseball term, when carving out the elevation changes. Even with 1 1/2 inches of foam it comes out to about 20 feet of elevation in N scale, enough for a small stream. After that I install the track and then add more foam for hills and mountains. Carve out the square corners and smooth the foam to your liking and your all set to start adding ground foam.

If you have any questions please ask!

The area my layout is basically modeled after is northwest Arkansas between Ft. Smith and the Winslow tunnel. It was part of Frisco's Central Division between Monett, Missouri and Paris, Texas. The Arkansas and Missouri Railroad currently runs the line between Monett and Ft. Smith. They have a excursion train that runs between Ft. Smith or Van Buren to Winslow that is a very good day trip. The fall colors are the trips I highly recommend.

The background buildings are all sratch- built from card stock. The tall building on the left by the bridge is a woolen mill. Next is Watkins Express Company, it's a King Mill print with a small loading dock kit attached. The next building is another King Mill building that is the office for Norge Manufacturing and the last building is the Norge assembly facility where they make kitchen appliances.
