I have my first digital camera and I thought this was a good chance to post my first rock painted. The grey highlights do not stand out as much as they do in the picture. Please give advice. All I did was mix washes of black, grey, burnt umber, raw umber and raw sienna. Any suggestions?

Wow- talk about misleading headers ! I thought I was going to see white plaster that was Adobe Photoshopped into rocks.

Claudio- A very good first attempt and one that is reminiscent of mine. I suggest you take a look at real life "prototype" rock formations or photographs thereof and take it from there.

You have demonstrated great patience and stick toitiveness in doing the Gulf and Summit and now making the rocks for the same.

Here is one of several "first" attempts.

    Good first effort.
I'd try another black-only wash to bring out the cracks in the rocks a little better. Typically, rocks are rarely one color on the edge without having some of the same color run down or back over the top flatter portion. Your rock "edges" are gray but everything else is brown or beige. I'd opt for less brown and more gray using a black wash with minimal burnt umber after each black wash use. Keep it watery. You can dry-brush white along the gray edges to give the impression of reflected sunlight on the rock tips.
    Just a few thoughts.

    Claudio:

Very nicely done... Some black wash will bring out the highlights in the rock formation.

Stay cool and run steam.....

Try mixing the paint with 5 times as much water and then stain the plaster- then leave for 1 hour and dont touch it. Often too much paint looks like paint. I know because Ive gone through this problem.
P.S. only stain the plaster once. Good luck

I'm thinking a wash of black ink to bring out the crevises too. Other then that, it looks good.:)

Looks very good! A india ink wash, and maybe a very gentle scuffing with a wire brush to highlight the rocks a bit more..

Dang, here, I thought you were going to get a bunch of requests to teach other cameras to paint rocks.... Mine included! ;)
