Does anyone make a 2 rail SD40-2 (any version)?

I'm thinking seriously about switching from N scale to O scale, but I might not if SD40-2s aren't available.

    Thanks for any info.

Hi Kisatchie, You don’t say if you want plastic or brass. I will start with the plastic. Weaver models made a plastic SD40-2 some years ago. I've seen them for sale at O Scale West. The big O scale show in Chicago probably will have them too. MTH makes an O scale model, old Weaver molds I'm told, but it is 3 rail. The up side is NWSL has replacement wheels and will press them on the old axles for you for a price. Then you will have to decide how you want to do your power pick up. In brass, there have been several offered. Currently Central Locomotive Works offers them. If you don’t mind doing a kit the old CLW’s offered them and they can be found at shows and on eBay.

Thanks for the info, Greg. I'm strictly a plastic modeler. Ah, I have so much to learn about O scale.

I see you are from New Orleans. Do you have any interest in the SD40T-2? Lionel brought one out that with some new wheels and rear step modification would make a nice scale unit. There was one O Scale Trains Magazine that was kit bashed from a Weaver SD40-2 that turned out nice. If you are willing to do some plastic kit bashing and modifications, the plastic SD40-2 and its cousins are quite doable. Also a friend of mine made an SD38-2 from a Weaver GP38-2 that turned out real nice. The secret was making it a non-dynamic brake unit and the shell went on a stretched frame. He cast urethane SD trucks and used a modified Weaver single motor drive. If interested, I could see about posting his pictures.

    Cheers,
    Greg

Thanks for the info and the photo offer. I'm not into kitbashing locomotives - I'm just kitbashing / scratchbuilding structures right now.

However, I've definitely decided to go into O scale 2-rail, even though I'll need to wait for the SD40-2. I hope Atlas decides to make it in the future.

The SD40T-2 from Lionel is actually not to scale. The fuel tank is to short, along with the locomotive itself, but it does sound nice.
