This was an attempt at high speed rail in Spain. They eventually went with the Talgo and this creature has been parked since around 1980.
It would have been scrapped by now, if in the USA. Does Spain have any historical rail preservation activity?
Here's another neat abandoned train, this one in Germany that unfortunately got hit by those elements: Germany does have preservation interests with their trains, and thankfully all three of these ET403 trainsets were "saved" in 2011. Although, mostly I think the three sets are being used in combination to make one functional set due to lack of spare parts and the general disrepair of all of them. This project started in 2012 or 2013 and won't be done until late 2016 at the earliest. [photo from www.bahnbilder.de] -Mike
What about this Alco engine that sits somewhere in the jungle of Suriname? It's purpose was to haule bauxite (for making aluminum) from the mines to the future port of Apoera. The 80km of railroad has never been used. The engine has only made some testruns, and then was parked here. (source: http://www.nicospilt.com/index_suriname.htm)
Looks like the Alco has been sitting for quite a while with brush growing over it. Looks like a RSD-12 to me. Some years ago I was where some former SP passenger cars were stored. Most of the windows were broken out and when I got inside one of the cars the seats were ripped apart and the light fixtures smashed. In the washrooms the mirrors .sinks and toilets were smashed . The interior of the car was totally destroyed. Only fire could have done more damage. It was a sad sight for sure.
